Took the Stillen exhaust off back to OEM

My exhaust welds were rusted and the entire exhaust had rust spots all over it... you could see the exhaust too much to see all the gross rust spots. I would have thought that this exhaust would have held up better after 7 months.

Damn that sux man. I've only had mine on for about a month now. I would get in contact with Josh or someone at Stillen. Its supposed to be stainless steel.

Wowzer, that definitely makes me think twice about buying a Stillen product. Hope you are reading this Stillen.

Ahhh man, now I have to go outside to make sure my exhaust is not doing the same thing, especially because I currently live here in Missouri and they were salting the hell out of the roads here during the winter..........I will update.

Sorry to hear that, it also gives me a second thought about buying an exhaust also, I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.
Since we're on the topic of exhuast who else is going to make one for the
09 Max? and when will it come out, I'm open to other brands of exhaust as well especially the full cat back system.

this is what they said:

There is a limited lifetime warranty on our stainless steel exhaust kits. The warranty covers rust through but not surface rust.

Customer Service Manager
Steve Millen Sportparts Inc.

I even sent them pictures of the exhaust but they have not replied

That is kind of messed up. Looks like I will definitely be going somewhere else for my exhaust.

I agree. That's messed up. Reminds me of the Mustang I had in high school. I had a Bassani stainless X-pipe on it that saw a horrible New England winter, complete with salt and who knows what other chemicals and it didn't have a single spot of rust on it when it was time to sell the car more than a year later...

I'm waiting on Corsa's product due out this year.

That's disappointing to hear about Stillen's response.

Ok guys I went ahead and contacted Josh and asked him about his issue. He got back to me within 5 minutes. Here is the message:

Feel free to have them contact me directly with any concerns or if they aren't getting response from our customer service department.

The exhausts are guaranteed against rusting through, and surface rust is common with stainless steel exhausts in extreme climates, this is typical with virtually all exhausts constructed of 409 Stainless Steel.

Usually those areas are underneath the car, and shouldn't affect the tips or most areas of the muffler, and definitely won't affect sound or performance.

Thanks for the PM,

Josh

If you would like to contact him: Josh@STILLEN is his username. I hope that this shed some light on the situation.

Is St. Louis considered a extreme climate city?

Corrosion Resistance

Grade 409 resists atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust will form in most atmospheres; this rust retards further corrosion but makes the surface undesirable for decorative applications. The corrosion resistance is about the same as that of 3CR12 and the 12% chromium martensitic grades such as 410, and inferior to the 17% chromium grade 430.

If you want to learn more about 409 Grade Steel which is expressly made for Exhaust Systems hit the URL:

I think a good polish or something should get rid of all that. I see the rust but the majority of it just looks dirty to me.

Yeah, but look at that seam along the back of the muffler and the pipe welds, that looks really bad, and appears to go all the way around to the sides that are visible when installed. In that area there isn't anything but rust, it sure doesn't look like surface cancer...

Ya i checked mine out today and I am even getting a few tiny rust spots along with rust on the welds. I live in CT and the weather out here isn't that bad to the point where this should happen IMO plus i've only had the exhaust for about a month now.

Dude, that sucks. I don't care how non resistant this metal is to surface rust. I shouldn't be happening this quick in non-extreme conditions in such a short amount of time.

In June?

My Cattman doesn't even look like that after 4 Ohio winters. Faulty product IMO.

Faulty product, or unreliable company?

Maybe a bit of both if they're not standing behind this issue.

Wow, it's too bad that this is happening to your exhaust. I know you were enjoying the sound and the performance of it as well as how shiny it looked when you first got it.

Faulty product, or unreliable company?
Let me be the first to vouch for Stillen's products, despite what was said before all of the other products that I've bought from them have been nothing but topnotch with stellar quality, fit and finish.

Maybe Stillen should just consider using the same type of steel on their mufflers as Cattman does and maybe this wouldn't be happening.

i have stillen catback, and i shouldve bought an ebay knock off greddy catback instead, its just the name. my exhaust is definately not stainless steel like i was charged for. Even though off subject, my stillen lip cracked and they said they cant do anything about it, so i gotta buy a new one or get it fixed. stillen exhaust should be sold on ebay for $100, and not the crazy price they go for on the stillen website IMHO.
