I know that this sounds stupid and I'm certain that you and your friend checked this but the first thing I used to do when I got CELs on my 2k or 2k3 is to make sure that the Gas Cap is screwed on tightly.

The first time it happened in my 2k I was like WTF? I started checking the intake, disconnecting and reconnecting things and it still stayed there, I took it to Autozone to do one of those scans and then the guy checked the Gas Cap and then the light went off.

I felt about as tall as Tatoo from Fantasy Island.

Oh well, at least I didn't have to pay for a new MAF.

I have learned over time, sometimes its good to start simple. Two things happened to me once. One, I ran out of gas (Fuel Gauge broke), and couldn't figure out what happened, I was about to call a two truck, but just decided to try gas, started right up. Two, car would go full throttle while driving. After taking it to a shop for 3 days and getting it back, the problem happened again. Then took it to a dealership, they called the same day and said we found your problem, the mat would not allow the pedal to come back up from the floor, by the way, that'll be 80 dollars please!

Problem was addressed earlier post

The SES light has a long history. Back in Nov I had the problem and it was fixed by replacing the evaporator canister. A bunch of cars had a bad batch.

For more info see the "Sorry I bought this car" thread.
