So I was on a business trip for 4 days and came back to see a bird took a big dump on my sunroof. No big deal, I got in and went to the car wash to get her cleaned up. When it came out I saw something still on the glass, the droppings left an imprint and actually pitted the glass on the sunroof, WTF? I have never seen something like this in my life. I knew if you left it on the paint it can really screw things up but the glass? So now I have a nice pitted imprint on the glass. I looked at replacing the glass and it is $500 bucks, that is more than the windshield. Totally pissed of right now!

 

dam that sucks, usually i take car soap let it sit awhile to loosen it , then it comes off with a breeze, but dam that musta been some poop

 

I had a big glow of bird **** on my sunroof that I let sit for a day or to and it did nothing. Thats weird that that happened to you...

Clay Bar?

 

Blame it on the bird's diet, I had a Black 96 Nissan Pathfinder and a bird crapped on the roof/backdoor, I went to clean it off and it was like a combination of tar and sand glued to the paint, left a really nice etch mark in the clear coat.

It could probably be buffed out, I don't know if any coatings are used on the glass but it's worth a try.

No not at all. Clay Bar is Clay Bar. It is designed to take anything off of a flat surface. Definitely try it out, use lots of clay lube.

Edit: I shouldn't say anything. Any above surface contaminants would be more accurate.

 

Exactly or try a little rubbing compound or wax, they will work as well. Have used both on glass without issue.

 

The "lovebugs" here in Florida will do the same thing. Acidic guts ruin paint, etc.

 

I have actually heard of situations where certain bird fecal material has built up on bridges and caused large scale deterioration. Their waste is highly corrosive. Doesn't really suprise me to hear it may deteriorate a window.

Remember, Glass is a liquid with a high viscosity.

Use 000 steel wool on the glass, not rubbing compound.
The steel wool will not scratch the glass, rubbing compound will!

 

Clay Bar then wax it (zymoil is the sh*t)

 

See if you can find glass polish, it used to take off hard water stains, acid rain damage, any other oxidation damage that occurs to glass.

 

Unfortunately the glass is f'd. It took the top finish off the glass and now the glass has an etched feeling to it. The bird dropping pattern looks like a fossil in the glass. The only thing to do is to replace the glass. I really should just leave it alone but knowing myself I will replace it because I will stare at it every time I go to the car.

It is simply a case of mind over matter. That works in almost every situation. The exception being with a blemish on an otherwise perfect Maxima. We just can't block that out of our mind. A small crack appeared at the bottom of my windshield while on top of a western North Carolina peak on the first day of a week-long vacation last month. That crack was always on my mind that entire vacation. Getting that windshield replaced was like getting an abcessed tooth out. When it was finally replaced, I went directly from angst and frustration to bliss and euphoria.

 

Do you have full glass coverage on your insurance?

 

This is covered *IF* he has 'Comprehensive' insurance as part of his auto insurance policy. Most folks do. But most folks also have a 'deductible', which makes the insurance more affordable. The decuctible on my comprehensive is $200, so I had to pay $200 of the $555 it cost to replace my windshield earlier this month.

I would expect that, when nemesis04 responds to your question, his situation will be fairly similar to mine. But we will wait and see.

 

I have full glass coverage. If I have to replace a windshield there is no money out of pocket. Technically this is a cosmetic issue as the glass is not broken just pitted and you really do not need to see out the sunroof to drive. Not sure if this would fly with the insurance company. I am going to take it to a glass place and see what they think I should do. I will replace the glass myself, it looks like only 4 bolts hold the glass in place.

Actually I use Arm & Hammer Whitening tooth paste on slilghtly scratched mirrors and glass. It has some polishing fine grit in it and it usually works wonders at removing pits and scratches! It's inexpensive too and plus you can till brush your teeth with it after you're done. And no I am not joking this really does work!

Man I hate to laugh about this one, but only reason I am is b/c I swear this sounds like something that would happen to me. Have a bird with some poop from hell dump on my windshield...LOL ! Sorry dude...I really am.
