Intelligent Key - Buttons are too easy to activate.

Has anyone stuck their Intelligent key in their front pocket, leaned over to do something like tie your shoes, and set off the panic alarm, unlocked the car, or accidentally open the trunk?

I think that Nissan needs to recess the buttons a little bit more, to keep them from getting accidentally pushed.

My old 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, which I traded for the Maxima, had keyless entry with recessed rubber buttons, and I never had this issue.

And if any Nissan engineers are reading this, how about adding remote start to the car. Many cheaper cars at least have this.
It is embarrassing to be showing off your car and the "push button start" system and someone says "So you have remote start as well, right?", and you have to give a sheep-ish "no".

Oh yes, as well as coming outside and seeing all the windows down!! I love the range, but perhaps the buttons could be recessed a bit.

Funny That....I can open my windows from the living room, yet I have heard of others that have the same issue as you (perhaps a range of 10 feet or so.)
I have noticed over the (almost) year that the range is dwindling a bit, might be time to start looking for a new battery! But I may let it go a bit more just so I can sit in the recliner and read the paper without worrying about my windows going down again!

I have never had this issue at all. I even have every possible cheezy key chain add-on I could find because I have a small phobia about not being able to feel the keys in my pocket. Even with my small child sized key set I have not run into this issue at all. However, I have ran into this issue with other key fobs so I personally thought the Nissans fob was actually built quite well. I agree with the remote start though. Every other car I was looking at had it as a standard option and this is something I would use everyday in the brisk cold of Canadian Winters.

Especially when your seating in the car getting out or getting in the car and the panic alarm goes off. It always seems to do it when there are alot of people outside. I almost gave this older gentlmen a heart attack. (Bad Max always like showing off to the ladies)

Never had a problem with either range or accidental activation of the remote.

Also I feel apart of the problem is based on how much stuff you have in your pockets. How tight your pants are. And how many keys you have attached to the Intel. Key.

I love the design of the key. I like it much better than rubber buttons. I've only hit the panic button by accident once, and that was when i was carrying my girl's phone in my pocket with the key cuz she didn't have any.

The range for lock/unlock is excellent, but rolling the windows down remotely has a very poor range - usually i am at the car by the time it finally works.

Hold the unlock button down for several seconds and the windows will drop!

I like the feature where you can associate seat position (1 or 2) with each fob. Wife and I share the Max and have very different seat settings. Now when I unlock using my fob the seats go to my position.

I have never set off anything by accident, because I wear VERY loose clothing, both shirt and pants. But I agree that the buttons should be a little better protected than they currently are. I can see where anyone wearing tight-fitting pants would have a problem with this fob.

As to range, I can't lower my windows from very far (haven't taken the time to determine the exact distance).

BUT

I often measure the distance from which I can lock the car with this remote (I have an exact 36" stride, so simply count my strides as I walk to or from the car), and, depending on the situation, it ranges from around 200 feet to 300 feet. I have had it work from around 350 feet on several occasions, and 385 feet once.

The cost was about $500 from the dealer. I am not sure what was involved but I still have the 2 remotes for the car.
works great and has great range.

Per the owner's guide, you can't.

I used to have a '98 VW New Beetle.

You could turn and hold the key in the door lock to lower/raise the windows. Nice feature to put the windows up w/o having to get back in the car. Minor, but I used it many times.

the guy at the dealership told me that it couldn't be done with just the stock intel. key, it has to be with an aftermarket remote start system then they could program it to the key fob. do u think yours is like this?

One day it was getting ready to rain at work, just so happen to look outside and my windows were down. Now I keep my control in my desk and out of the pocket while at work.

I think that the unit was an Audiovox remote strat module upgrade.
The dealer did the install and had it ready when I picked up the car.

Sort of the same here. I put them beside my lunch box, to keep from activating the windows down function, during the day.

I had a 2006 Murano with the Intelligent key before I got the Max, and twice rolled down the windows during a heavy rain storm, over night. Not a fun way to start the day.

Issues

Has anyone took their car in because your Intel key is not working as designed? If so what fixed it?

I took mine in because I have a ton of issues with the key.

1) I have to be +15 feet away from the car to lock it, pressing the button the whole time I'm walking away.
2) The double press on door handle to unlock all doors and trying to open the trunk from the rear button or using the fob works 1 out of every 10 or so attempts.

The motor that raises the steering wheel stripped out, needs replaced.

I replaced the batteries in both fobs myself and didn't change anything. I took it to the dealer left it there all day, and got the standard "Everything worked fine for us?" I gonna try another dealer and see what they say.

I'm just about over it.. to the point I am beginning to hate the car for this very reason. Wife's 2010 C350 Intel Key works perfect everytime and its in buried in her purse next to her iPhone, lipstick, wallet, and God only knows what else.

I may be putting the max on the block real soon.

Help please!!

Several here had had the steering wheel raising motor gears strip out. That is not good.

But as for your I-fob, something is DRASTICALLY wrong here.

We are supposed to be 18 inches or further from the car to guarantee locking with the fob (so the system can be positive you are outside the car). 15 feet is absurd.

At the outer extreme, I can be ready to enter a restaurant, suddenly have some doubt that I locked the car, then simply point the I-key at the car OVER 200 FEET AWAY AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT, and the lights of acknowledgment that the car has been locked flash brightly. And my fob has the batteries that came with the car (mfg Oct '08).

I have never had either the dash trunk switch, fob trunk button or the trunk button under the right side of the chrome rear strip fail to unlock the trunk, and I use them all the time.

I could be wrong, but I think your fob may have a problem.

Sorry to hear. That's def not normal. One thing I was impressed about was the distance the lock/unlock works from. I have been walkng into my g/f's condo with my car parked far around the next block of condos and pushed the lock button with the car totally outta sight and hear the horn honk to signal it locked. The range on the intel key is amazing. I thought I had a problem with the button on the trunk to pop it open once then I relized I had the valet saftey engaged. Hope your dealer fixes these issues for you for they are not normal...

So funny I woke the whole house up at 4am when I went to take my shoes off In my bedroom and the worst part was for some reason I had to walk all the way downstairs by the garage to turn it off.

This problem will go away when you get very old like me, and all your clothes become very baggy.

the panic button is the only button that has accidentally been hit on my Max so far. It's gone off 3-4 times while in my pocket and always when I am squatting down or sitting and putting a lot of pressure on my pockets.

My wifes NEVER get's accidentally hit. She just keeps the I-Key in her pocketbook.

It could be that you have also pushed the other buttons accidentally. Unless you hold the trunk button down for a second or two, it won't open the trunk. If you pushed the 'lock' button down, unless you are one of those neophytes that has it both flash the lights AND blow the horn, you might never know you hit it.

I personally feel the panic button should have had a little more protection (like a concave recessed button) against accidental keying, but that is just my opinion.

I suppose the same thing could have been said about all the buttons. However, I have only had issue with fob that one time. Other wise in 1+ Years I am problem free. But of course now that I have said that my windows are probably rolling down just as you are reading this.

Part of my solution to keep from accidentally activating a button on the I-Key was to get these covers. It helped cut down on the accidental issues.

The range of the remote is too large...I could be at least 100' away and on the 3rd floor. It works. Its true with just about any nissan...even my 02 has the same range.

I absolutely LOVE that range. I can forget whether I locked the car after already having gotten 200 or 250 feet away from the car, and simply turn, point, press and smile as the car winks back at me.

The homelink garage/gate opener is the same. I can open my gate and garage doors before I turn into my driveway, and my driveway is 250 feet long. No slowing down and waiting; just woosh up the drive at 30 mph, and right into the garage at 5 to 10 mph. no wasted time sitting and waiting for something to open.
