Horsepower will suffer with Regular Unleaded Gas
Photo of 2010 Max fuel door. I asked the service manager if there were any differences in the engines (2009 vs. 2010) and he said he knew of none. The only thing he could think of was maybe Nissan detuned the engine to enable it to accept regular fuel. Who knows?
I would bet my paycheck the fuel mapping in the ECU has been changed.
In most of Canada, the highest you will find is 91 AKI. Sunoco makes a 94 but it contains at least 10% ethanol. Shell, Petro Canada, Esso - all their 91s are straight gasoline, no ethanol. Here in Ottawa, where we have some of the least expensive gas in the country, the difference between 87 AKI and 91 AKI is about 40 cents US per US gallon. We're all in litres here. How common is 89 in the States? Most stations here carry 87 (which I use quite happily in my VQ-engined 2008 Pathfinder), 89 and 91. Been happiest with Shell.

Sorry guys. Forgot for a moment that Ottawa is not the centre of the Canadian universe. Too politically hot these days. For most of Ontario and Quebec (Toronto to Montreal) that I drive in regularly, 91 AKI is usually tops with the exception of Sunoco 94. Three grades only at most pumps. And there are not too many Husky stations around here. If any. I'll be using Petro Canada 91 for a while since my new Max came with 2500 litres at 20 cents off. Be interesting to see how it compares to the Shell which I have been using quite happily. But since Max is going up for the winter, most of that 2500 litres will be burnt in the Pathy. I remember when I got the Pathy in early 2008, I was using premium and getting the strong sulphide smell off the cat. My service manager said I was "overloading the cat" and told me to drop back to regular. Cured the problem and it runs just fine. Be nice if we could flash the ECM in our 2009 Maximas so they could run on 87 or 89 (so call me cheap!).
