Not sure if this helps with the warranty but a TSB was issued for this problem it seems. I can't download it as I reached my limit however you can if you sign up.

Here is a link to the TSB:
http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/Knowl...html?catid=536

Ninth Entry down the page reads as follows:

NTB09-094
2009 NISSAN MAXIMA; STEERING COLUMN COMFORT ADJUSTMENT
The steering column power adjustment (tilt or telescope) does not work or makes abnormal noise when operating the switch.

I got it and took a look.

The gist of the TSB is to replace either the Tilt or Telescoping motors (depending on the problem type.) It may give me some negotiating room to see if I can get it under some type of "warranty repair!"

Thanks again MaxLoverAZ for the tip.

Grr... I don't normally use my electrical adjustment, but my battery died and it reset my settings for the comfort and convenience settings, and the wheel moved... and low and behold, when I went to move it back, it won't work... and I'm at 37,100 miles... this ought to be a fun discussion with the dealership and Nissan

Did you check the Comfort & Convenience settings on the Nav. screen to see if it is turned off?

I previously had it off (don't like the feature, as I don't need it, and my kids in the back seat don't appreciate it either). But when the battery was disconnected, it reset the setting turning it on... and it kept moving my wheel down, but not up. The wheel will move, when I use the button and PUSH on the wheel... but otherwise, it does not tilt smoothly in any direction... sometimes not at all. TSB04-094 covers the issues, stating to replace the tilt or telescoping motor... depending on the issue, but I'm 1000 miles past warranty, which pisses me off, as its a known issue. Just called and left a service writer at the dealership I bought the car from (who also services it). We'll see what they say.

Stearing wheel tilt motor

My tilt motor went out about 40,000 miles. I bought the car used and a extended warranty. When I took the car in they said the motor was not covered. It would cost $385.00 to get it fixed. I raised such a fuss since I was told when I bought the warranty it would cover bumper to bumper execpt normal wear items and they did cover it.

My wheel just started doing crazy stuff last night. Wont go up with out pushing up on it and it makes a grinding noise. Turn the car on and it does down as if it was all the way up, so it tires to go where it belongs, but since it did not go back up, it goes mostly the way down. Im at 56000 miles. Have not had any major issues until now. Bought back in June 09.

SO a TSB is not a recall, but its just a know fact that something is messed up, but is not covered????

There is no way that Im paying $1300 to get this replaced.

Just had to have both tilt and telescope motors replaced at 47K. I do have an extended warranty so it only cost $50. Interesting that it took over 3 weeks to get the parts, according to the dealer. I would check with them each week and they would just say that the parts are on back order. I called another dealer after the 2nd week to see if they had the part. The parts manager said that they didn't have them in stock, but as long as the parts were in country, they could have them, no longer than 5 days. That got me to thinking, and I decided to call Nissan Consumer Affairs. The person that I talked to was great. After hearing my story, she asked if I could hold, and that she would call the dealer, while I waited, to see what the story was. When she came back on the line to me, she informed me that the parts had "just arrived" at the dealership, according to the part person at the dealer and I could bring my Max in the next day. I wonder how long I would have had to wait had I not called Nissan? Maybe because I had the extended warranty they wanted to hold onto the parts for a customer that had to pay full price for the parts and labor. I don't know. A side note: when the Nissan Consumer Affairs rep came back on the line with me, she commented how rude the parts person was to her. She also said that if everything wasn't handled to my satisfaction, I should call her back immediately. She gave me her name and extension number, along with a reference number. I was impressed.

That is awesome!

So, its not a recall or anything like that. I will be paying out of pocket if I want this fixed?

I think it only cost me about $800 for both motors replaced and CVT serviced (fluid change)...if they are quoting 1300 you may want to take it to another dealer and check them out.

Took mine to the dealer and my sqeaking noise problem needs a new motor. $381 ticket but hopefully my MasterTech vehicle warranty covers this under the Ultra package.

Service rep at Nissan acts like it's coming out of her pocket when I told them I had purchased a bumper to bumper warranty. I was specifically told that bumper to bumper will cover everything when I purchased the car. I've had the vehicle for 3 weeks so far and I get treated like this.

i had mine replaced 4 months ago when it started making noises. dealership covered it under warranty no issues, said it was an 800 dollar repair though otherwise. im hoping the one they put in there is a different build (maybe newer?) and isnt the same exact piece that will fail in the same amount of time...guess we'll see.

when I used to work at the plant, putting steering columns in was one od the things I did. We had a lot of problems with the power/electirc columns failing/locking up on us

That's what the stealership told me as well. The 09's tend to have this issue. But I'm curious about these bulletins? If I take my car in to have this fixed, what do these bulletins do for me?

Add another one to the list. Telescoping in and out just stopped working at 82k and the motor just grinds. I have the 100k/5yr warranty so I will be taking it in. I'll report back if I experience any headaches.

As a side note, there are a few other minor things I plan to bring up while I'm there. Anyone else have experience with the Nissan Extended warranty with the $50 deductible on multiple issues? Does it apply per issue, or the whole visit. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

That does it. When my warranty is over I am disabling the motors on the steering column. The raising steering is nice but not worth the repair costs

From the Comfort setting on the Nav screen. See page 3-31 of the Owner manual that states

" The entry/exit function can be adjusted or canceled. See “Comfort & Convenience settings” in the “Monitor, climate, audio, phone and voice recognition systems” section of this manual. You can cancel the tilt function and the seat move back function per page 4-13.
