Motorola Droid

Purchased a Motorola Droid today and will be picking it up from the store first thing tomorrow. For those of you that haven't seen the phone, it is the first Android 2.0 phone for Verizon. It's very impressive. I'll be interested to see how it works with the Max's Nav and Bluetooth. I'll post an update once I get to play with it.

I saw a bunch of people standing out side of the Verizon store. Thats what it was. I might have to extend my contract if the reviews are worth a darn.

Will be VERY interested to hear your report! I was sure I was going to get an iPhone this holiday, but AT&T's coverage in the DC area is VERY poor.

A few considerations:

How well does it work with the 7th Gen Maxima's bluetooth? Any issues or concerns?

How does it function as a GPS - at least a good daily use one if not a replacement for my Garmin?

How easy is it to utilize the music and podcasts already in iTunes through Droid?

Can you try streaming the Droid GPS audio thru the bluetooth?

I used to watch videos on my RAZR in my Max with the bluetooth audio streaming the audio on the car's speakers. If the droid can stream the GPS directions over the bluetooth I'll be stoked!

The IPhones are on the 3G network, same as the Verizon Droid, from what I have seen they are as good as Verizon's service.

3G just means the connection and dowload/upload speeds and qualilty. Problem is that AT&T has a poor cell tower infrastructure at this time. Yes it is good in major population areas, but once you get outside of that... Good Luck.

On another note, I was gonna get the Droid yesterday. But I forgot my service contract does not come up till 06/2010. So, instead of $200 or $150 they wanted $600. I basically told the poor sales girl (in front of the execs that happened to be there yesterday), Im not a cheap bastard but I am not paying $600 for a phone and promptly walked out of the store.

I can wait 8 mths for my contract to end to get the Droid, by then the bugs will be worked out and newer version will be out or very close to being out. Besides, $600 is better spent replacing my stock speakers and maybe adding an amp to the car.

.
Thank you for sticking up for the rest of us and not dishing out the $600. That is an insane price for a commodity item and the fewer of us that fall for the glitz, the better for all. I can see the need for a premium markup but 2 to 3X????

Actually not the same technology which is why the iPhone won't operate on Verizon.

With CDMA (Verizon) you can't do data and voice at the same time.....

That is a deal breaker for me.

These things are very expensive unless they're able to get you to extend your contract (and at at least $70 a month, the Droid contract isn't cheap). They subsidize the device knowing they're getting another 24 months of payments with you.

Still, you're better off waiting. I DO have the option of trading in my phone now for $200 and plan to wait because I recall what happened with the iPhone, with a substantially better, less expensive one coming out months after the original.

hi guys,
I actually bought the DROID and have a 2009 nissan maxima with navigation.
I am not to happy with the bluetooth. I came from a bb storm (sucked) and i am a lot happier with the droid as a phone but the bluetooth support is not that great. I was able to pair the phone up and ran to a few issues in which the phone would not stay connected. This seemed to happen in the beginning but now i really havent had any connection issues. But I can not download my contacts via bluetooth. I have no idea why. The is no options in the contact to transfer them.Didnt have this issue with my BB.

I would love to try and use the bluetooth for the audio but i cant figure that out either.
I was wondering does the navigation have software updates? Meaning if i go to the dealer would they update the software of the navigation system? Just wondering because i have been having ipod issues also and i was wondering maybe i had an old version of the software in my car.

I have to say though the DROID navigation is awesome!

I agree that at&t's coverage is terrible. I get dropped calls regularly.

I also have the Droid (and love it) with the 09 Max with Premium no Nav and the phone synced to the car quickly and painlessly. Also the Droid is a perfect substitute for the nav system. I have a phone that cost me nothing that gives voice directions for free vs. a $2,000 upgrade it was an easy choice. Granted I've only needed directions in my car twice this year so take if for what its worth.

I have not tried to stream bluetooth music from the Droid yet. I keep a 160 Gig iPod in the center console for my musical needs.

If any one is looking for a great phone on a good network I would go with the Droid. I also had the Storm which was fine but the Droid is more of a toy which is a huge plus.

DCONN, Lochness, others: any updates on your Droid / Maxima experience? I'm very keep to know (a) how Droid does with Maxima's bluetooth and (b) how it functions as a GPS.

I have the droid also and it connects easily with the bluetooth and hasn't had any issues of dropping the connection. I also couldn't transfer my contacts from the droid and the max didn't keep my old contact on my old phone so I need to manually put them in. I havn't tried to stream songs yet, didn't even know it could be done, but i also have an ipod in the console and so i don't have much need. The droid does rock though, my wife is threatening to smash it because i spend so much time playing on it.

Its been great so far. Calling from the car gives me better voice quality than using just the phone. The GPS is also working very well. I have the car mount which makes it extremely easy to get and follow directions.

HTC Droid > Motorola Droid Hands Down.

The keyboard on the Motorola is the worst board on the market.

10 Maxima and Droid

I have a Droid and just picked up a 2010 Maxima with Premium package. Phone BT works great. My question is that I listen to Pandora through the Droid and there is no BT audio on the phone or car. Also USB doesn't allow for music like IPOD. I bet the best case would be to but a cable with a mini-headphone jack on one end and RCA jacks on the other that I can plug into the audio AUX in the car.

Well, I finally have it figured out. I have a 2010 Maxima with Premium package.
I have my Droid going through Bluetooth for phone calls.
I purchased a cable with mini-jack and RCA on the other end. Plug the mini jack into the headphone jack of Droid, plug in the red/black cables into RCA jacks in center console of the Maxima. I can now stream Pandora through the phone through the AUX Source on the Stereo.
I also charge the phone from the cigarette lighter adapter in the center console.
All works well except sometimes when I leave the the car, I have to reset phone to get it to work once I drop Bluetooth.

I've read that the Droid does not allow for using voice commands via blue tooth (CNET: "The Droid does not support Bluetooth voice dialing").

Does that mean you can't say "Dial Joe at Home" and get it to place the call for you???

Where did you get the mini jack and RCA cable from, I've found it online but not in stores.

Droid Incredible

I've been searching the Forum for information on the new Droid Incredible recently introduced by Verizon. Nothing out there, so it looks like I'll be re-activating this thread.

Has anyone purchased a new Droid Incredible from Verizon yet? I'm thinking up upgrading from my Blackberry 8830 World phone to the Incredible. Just wondering if I'll have any problems. The Blackberry has been flawless with my Maxima.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I just purchased one to test out the VZ network for 29 days. Finally got aggervated with AT&T's service (iPhone User).

So far the only issue that I hear:

1) Many people having are that the actualy signal on the phone does not show correctly, you actually have more service than your phone says.

2) The battery is horrible but they are releasing an extended batter (around $60) that is suppose to double the life of the OEM one.

Those are the only issues and as an iPhone 3Gs user and a user of the iPhone since it released I find it very hard to choose between the two. The phone is great but there are things that did dosn't have like the iPhone has (ex. Quality Applications) but the service is much much better.

If you have more specific ?'s PM me and i'll do my best to answer or test and answer.

I appreciate the insight. However, just to be clear, my question is directed more towards inquiring about problems with the phone's interface with the Maxima. I'm pretty much sold on the phone. But, I just wanted to see if the phone had any problems interfacing with the Maxima....i.e. Bluetooth, voice activation, contact list, etc.

TIA

I have no idea how long I have been with Verizon, probably 6 years, but the bars are no indication of signal strength, I've had conversations with friends and others and had 1 bar or nothing, 9 out of 10 times you need to end the call and call back cause the quality is bad.

My only issue with ATT/iPhone, is call quality, and my primary need is a phone 1st.

How long is the battery life, I know several factors effect it but could you relate how yours is, does using the apps and internet use it up faster then just using the phone and txting.

1.) That's correct, HTC phones have that glitch, kinda annoying especially to the customer.

2.) It will not double the life, more like a 50% increase if you're lucky. It should be available for purchase in the next weeks.

Yes I have the Incredible and the calling by BT does work! If you add the phone number to the car's phone book it works. I did try the "transfer phone number" option via BT and couldn't get that to work but I think I wasn't doing it correctly.

Anyways it works just like my BB Bold 9000.

Hope this helps you.

If you can't get it to work, download Bluetooth file transfer in the market and try pairing to the phone through that app.

I can pair and make calls just fine, I was only speaking about the ability to transfer the phones address book to the car which isn't really a necessity as it's very easy to just manually add.

Thanks I'll check out that BT file transfer but I think it's already built into this phone.

Here are the supported BT profiles for this phone:

Headset, Handsfree, Stereo, Phonebook Access Profiles

I know what you were talking about and I work for Verizon so I know what the phone does haha but sometimes that program will help with the phone book transfer if it fails by doing it regularly.

Cool working at Verizon however you must have a very stressful job I couldn't do retail let alone cell phones...

Why does everyone say the Android O/S doesn't support BT dialing? Is it because people are using their BT headset and the phone versus having a car that supports BT dialing?

It's fine, I enjoy it. Customers don't phase me lol and the Android OS doesn't support initiating the call from the headset regardless of which one you have. Google knows and will most likely fix it in the 2.2 SW codenamed Froyo. There is an app called Voice Dial HF that will allow you to do voice dialing over BT but you cannot initiate the call from the headset. You can download a program called button shortcut and set Voice Dial HF to run when you press and hold the search icon. Not the best solution but its the best one out there.

I'm glad my car does it for me...

I don't wear a BT headset anymore, speaker phone or I get on my office line for long calls anymore.

Until the new software update comes out for the Droid there is no bluetooth headset/earpiece that will allow you to use handsfree dialing via the headset.

However, I believe the Maxima will allow you to use handsfree dialing to initiate phone calls. You just cannot do it using the BT device. That means if you own another vehicle that does not have a similar interface as the Maxima you will have problems.

Scr*w the ear-piece, good riddance....!

Why would you wear a BT headset in the Maxima when you don't have to with the built-in BT? This isn't an issue with Android as it's really an issue with your vehicle not supporting the correct BT profile for hands-free driving.

My 370Z works perfectly with my Android phone also. I can dial and receive calls all without a BT headset stuck in my ear...

Oh and it works in my current 2010 VW Jetta rental car!

I had an HTC Touch pro 2 witch did not BT sync with my 2010 Max. When I called HTC they actually suggested that the problem was the car. I said given the choice the phone goes NOT the car. I then got a Sprint EVO 4G and it works great in the Max. BT syncs well and phone book transferred over so I can call just by telling the car who I want to speak to. Max and Evo work great!
BTW, I would never wear those earpiece BT things as I shave my head and it makes me look like a Borg if I put one on.

Anyone who received the upgrade (recall for Prem/tech pckg on 2010) having issues with the Droid via USB reading the SD card now? Worked just fine before and now the car keeps displaying SD card busy.
