I like to use the shifter itself to shift the car. Not a fan of paddle shifers. I'm old school.

So you are saying using the transmission to slow down your car on the reg is fine? So instead of braking you just downshift and it doesn't put added wear on the cvt? From 70 to 30 all done by the transmission adds no wear or stress?

Having the transmission keep your speed constant via breaking at low RPMs doesn't put much stress on it. I agree. It does this from the factory so you don't gain speed going downhill(granted this hurts your mpg) The braking can be disabled via a consult iirc.

nah man read my first sentence again. if you did only transmission braking from 70-30 i imagine the RPMs would be pretty high the entire time so that's probably not the best idea long term. i can see the same amount of wear/tear happening to your trans simply from driving it at that high of an RPM as well (like leaving it "manually" in "first"). i never JUST downshift, but i definitely use it in addition to the pedal and especially in rain/snow where I need to slow down quickly it is extremely helpful. in those situations having the trans take some of that inertia away for you makes it much less likely your tires will lose traction.

i understand if people are hesitant to want to use their trans to slow down instead of brakes. you're right that simply put brakes are cheaper to replace. guess it helps that some of the 7th gen models have a 100-120k warranty on the trans. most of the issues I've seen with the CVT needing to be replaced has been because the owner dogged the car and probably stretched out that poor rubber band that holds our transmission together

My 2010 sv premium/tech has a lifetime warrentee on the transmission, I have to pay for the brakes, so make liberal use of the shifters.

I would use the paddle shifters more but I hate the fact that it upshifts for me. Why have paddle shifters if you can't actually shift the car when you want to at WOT?

It's all about using the engine breaking with properly timed down-shifting.
I love to watch these morons rushing past only to brake hard at the next red light. Pointless waste of gas and brakes IMOP.
