Cleaning Stillen?
Cleaning Stillen?
Hey all! I've had a Stillen intake on my Maxi for the last 1.5 years or so and probably around 15-20k miles and have been thinking about cleaning it for the last 6 months... talk about procrastinating!
Do they need cleaning? What's the best way to go about it? Do they need to get oiled or just some water and let it dry?

Come on man... Google is your friend.

Cleaning it at 20K miles is a bit overkill. Unless you live in serious dusty areas, you could wait until 40-50K to clean it. When you DO clean, it, make damn sure all the water has dried before you re-oil the filter and be careful NOT to over-oil the filter element. After re-oiling the filter, let it sit overnight before re-installing. Most people will throw a CEL because the MAF sensor gets bathed in oil after putting the cleaned and newly oiled filter on.

I have K & N filters on all my vehicles and I clean them when I think they are getting dirty. I don't wait for any specific miles or time. So it is totally up to you. I think most people wait too long to clean them and then it becomes a lot harder to clean. Very easy and as the previous posted stated. Make sure it is dry and re-oil sparingly. Less is more in this case.
Me personally, I didn't bother cleaning my k&n filter when I had my Stillen intake. I'm lazy and just bought a Green Performance filter for 60 bucks lol.
I think AFe makes their pro-dry filter with the same flange size, I just couldn't find a direct fit replacement myself.

Thanks guys, think I'll be skipping the cleaning as the filter will be coming off in about 12-13k more miles... Certainly don't want to purchase that cleaning crap for a one time deal! Maybe I'll find someone local willing to lend me some for a beer :P
I have a stillen intake as well and I clean my filter every 15k. I use filter oil from autozone, Spectre Oil, to re-oil it with, and clean it with the same stuff(it comes in a pack). The only suck part is actually getting the filter out, but it's not as bad as it sounds. Mechanical time was only 5-10 min., then there's the waiting for the filter to dry after cleaning it which takes a while.
