So my 11-year old and I were watching TV when one of the many Nissan Sales Event commercials came on again. They were featuring the new '13 Altima.
My kid asks me "Dad, why don't they ever advertise the Maxima?"
I had no answer for him.

My nephew said the same thing to me last week! Why isn't there any love for the Max from Nissan? Then my neighbor says "I'm pretty sure you got ripped off at the dealer, I think the Altima is their best sedan, I never see anything about the Maxima." I also don't have a response for these type of comments.
They featured a BUNCH of ads for the max in the last year or two...first one that comes to mind is this one:
Look for more Maxima adds in the next year, when the 8th gen comes out.
The focus is on the all-new Alti right now, since it's all new redesigned and all that crap.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't have a nice response for that kind of remark either.
These people don't know how it feels to be connected to your vehicle. The "I don't care as long as it gets me to point b." Don't even bother letting them try your car either. Won't work. Just let them see how much fun you're having with yours.

Altima is Nissans bread and butter, so they want to get the word out to keep those 200 to 300K a year sales (Altimas out sell Maximas, 370 Z's, Pathfinders etc combined yearly)! Z and Maxima don't get much respect in the marketing world from Nissan as they are not nearly the profit makers for Nissan and most of their buyers are repeat buyers that buy them just because of history etc etc..... Without the Altimas success in N. America since 02 Nissan would be a peon here.

.....they really only push the new body styles that are coming out. a couple years ago it was the 7th gen and the Juke commercials. now they are out and the commercials stop. the new altima is on now but next year will be few and far in between. Just like any other maker, commercials for their newest thing out.

lmao outsells them combined? i dont think so... altima only wins by about 50k sales a year and thats because city uses them. Theres a reason why Maxima is Nissans flagship sedan. Besides Maxima is an extremely popular car so it doesnt need much advertisement to come up sales
Altima sold 268,981 units in 2011 fleet and personal
Maxima =58,737 (fleet and personal)
370Z =7,328
Pathfinder= 25,935
total of 92,000 for the 3 formentioned.....even throw in Nissans second best seller Sentra at 114,991 units (fleet and personal) you still don't come close to Altima levels

Personally, I don't think the New Altima looks good. I saw it in person and thought, "Wow. It's like they tried to cram the maxima's style into a smaller body car."
IMO, 7th gen maxima looks better anyday. The new altima is ugly to me. Wanna be max....

This is the first car I bought that I actually just like being in it, very unlike the basic college car I had before. The Max is just awesome!
Thanks to all the people who post on the forum, I've learned so much.
How quickly we forget.
Back in the last half of 2008 and through 2010, I couldn't turn on the TV without seeing a Maxima ad. Anyone who did not see the Z to Maxima 'stretch' ads (growing family), or the girl waiting for the tranny to shift (which never happened because of the new CVT) before putting on her lipstick, or the endless series of ads showing a white Premium Maxima running side-by-side on a mountain road with a black Sports Maxima, or any of the downtown NYC street scenes with pretty girls staring at a Maxima either parked or passing nearby, was JUST NOT WATCHING TV between 2008 and 2010.
Ad concentration is based on timing. A new generation Altima has been released, so Nissan saturates us with Altima ads. When the next generation Maxima is released, Nissan will saturate us with Maxima ads.
And MONTE 01&97 SE (and a few others here) is absolutely correct that Altima is Nissan's volume product, while the Maxima is a limited edition flagship. Ghosn told us years ago that the plan/hope was to sell 250,000 Altimas a year and 70,000 Maximas. As Monte's numbers from 2011 show, Nissan sold almost 270,000 Altimas, and less than 59,000 Maximas. That is approaching a 5 to 1 ratio.
Those questioning the lack of Maxima ads at this time have not been keeping up on the ways of automotive advertising. This is an area that has not changed much since around 1950.

Even if they DID release a new Maxima and Altima at the same time, I presume we'd see more Altima ads.
It's the same reason you see the presidential candidates focusing so much attention on the "middle-class". It's a numbers game.
Don't be offended by this fact! MOST people know how an Altima and a Maxima fit into the pecking order.
