I did custom stereo for almost a decade, but have been out of it for a while.
I decided I needed a bit more low end in the maxima.

Despite 'paying for the name' I have always been a JL Audio fan. So much so that I blew a 12w7 in competition once upon a time. I'll be running a pair of 10w3 off of a 500/1 for now, and may upgrade to 10w6 down the road.

First, I built a sub box out of cardboard in order to get sizes worked out.
Then, I used the cardboard as a basic template for my measurements.
I designed the box so that it is only 12" deep, and sits on the raised portion at the rear of the trunk. It has the 'U' so that the pass through is still usable for long items.
The subs actually face the rear seat. There is a chance that I will lose a little output, but the subs won't get damaged by hauling crap around in the trunk.

I built this box out of birch ply, and stained it to match the wood trim in the cabin instead of carpeting the whole thing.

Thanks. I believe that if you are going to do a project, do it right.
Every seam has construction adhesive, then all seams are caulked.
I'll be selling these boxes if there is interest, as well.

I like this design! I'm currently using a 10" Boston Acoustics G5 with a passive radiator in a 0.5 cubic foot box. A lot of bass from such a small setup. Your setup is something I will look into later on if I decide to go with two subs.

That is a Sweet design, I would luv to see the finished product outside and inside the car! I'd probably do a plexiglass back to you could see inside the box. but awesome

 

So, I finished the box with two coats of stain, then 4 coats of clear with sanding in between each coat.

I mocked the subs:


And this is what the box looks like in the car: I will be painting the sealer that is visible a brown color. Next time I'll use a brown caulk on all the edges for a stained box.

The box takes 3 hours to make, and cost $50 for just the piece of wood. Staining and sanding takes another couple of hours if done right.

This will have significantly more output than the 6.5" and 8" boxes JL offers, with exception to a ported 8w7 box.

Why spend a few hours sanding and staining when you are going to leave your caulk exposed like that?

 

Lack of forethought. I originally planned to carpet the box, but changed my mind half way through.
I'll be putting some brown paint/stain over the caulk to cover it up/ blend it in.

 

I like your ambition for fabrication. Keep doing what you're doing and continue to share the results!
