I got my valves replaced from a local shop and TPMS is still on, they told me i have to go to dealership to reset it, is that true?

I believe all they need is to be activated. They contain batteries that are "asleep" until they are turned on. Once they are activated they should sync with the car.
I would check with local locksmiths as they often have the equipment to do this and are often much cheaper than the dealership.

 

I must be misunderstanding the situation.

The metal tire stems (valves) that come on the Maxima wheels are part of the TPMS system, and cannot be replaced with anything except duplicate metal tire stems (valves) made for the Nissan Maxima TPMS System.

Unlike ordinary valve stems, barring an accident or other damage, the metal OEM valve stems on the Maxima should be permanent.

 

TPMS are very much replaceable due to the fact they can after time stop functioning. The Maxima TPMS have internal batteries and transmit @315 MHz. Tons of aftermarket Nissan TPMS are available but as you indicate you need to understand the correct type for replacement.

 

Replacement TPMS sensors need to be registered with the BCM. This is done at the dealership with either Consult 3+ or the Signal Tech 2 tool.
