I have been wheel searching and studying threads. Just trying to do my homework with this generation max. I see there is a very big rivalry between 20's and 22's. I see guys stating that the 22s plus coilovers is hard to maintain. What does that even mean?

I will be honest, I have never bought or rode on a set of 22's, so I am very curious to know what the REAL issues are. Normally I would look at a 22 and laugh, but these 7 gens squeeze those 22s and as long as the wheel design is chosen well, they look damn good. What is the difference between being slammed on 20's vs 22's? (besides the ride height obviously) Honestly, I am trying to get my build together and would like to know some information before I begin. Thanks Guys

Honestly, it's all personal preference. Everyone is going to have their own opinion as to what they think because well that's what they generally like. So what it all boils down to is your personal preference. Some guys like 20's because it's a nice clean look with enough room that they can generally lower or "slam" their car with no problems. Not only that but with 20's you'll have a little more tire than you would with a 22. So depending on the "look" you're going for it's up to you. I myself like the way some 22's look. But I wanted to lower my car as well and just didn't think it would work out to well for the look I'm going for.

 

Agreed on the personal preference piece. The only style wheel that -I personally - seems to fit these cars well are the concave or any flush faced wheel. With we had fender flares but the way the body literally comes straight down at the wheel well arc, anything with serious lip looks very strange. These cars are truly "fat girls". <--hope that made sense

 

This is the wheel I have chosen. Just have to decide on size.

 

I get what you're saying. Believe me, out of everything to do to my car I think finding the "perfect" rims were the hardest thing for me. But I finally found the ones I want and got them. At first I was looking for a concaved wheel as well. But I wanted a serious concave look. And it just seemed hard to find without breaking the bank. So I now own a set of staggered rims. 20x8.5 front and 20x10 rear. Fronts have 2.5in lip and rear has 4in lip. I'll have them mounted this weekend and will post pix. But good luck in with what you choose.

 

That sounds pretty sick. I can't wait to see the pics. Yeah man its hard as hell to choose wheels because you never know how they are truly going to look until they are accually on the car. As far as these wheels, i must say, Lexani has stepped up very well. I have never seen a Multispoke wheels this design avail in 20"-22". Most of the time they are OG style. These should be very interesting. .

 

Lowered on 22's...no scrubbing and perfect alignment....after front camber kit and rear camber/toe kit of course! Wouldn't have it any other way!!!

 

Very clean sir. Now one thing I can say, is i have NEVER seen a picture of a 7gen on 22s from the front of the car or the rear of the car dead on. Anyone have those pictures?

 

If your going to spend the money on Lexani Forged wheels, i would go 22's all the way. 9's in front and 10's in rear. Or 22x9 all around. Reading all the reviews, 22 can sometimes rub, ride hard and bend easier cause you have to roll 30 series tires. But look the best. I ordered 22x9 Lexani R12 and been waiting because there not in stock yet. There concave. I will post pics hopefully in a couple of weeks....

 

I like 22"s and have 22x8.5 all the way around. 245/30"sn only rub just slightly on rare occurences on inside front mud flaps. Gonna order some eibachs soon and have the clean no gap look. I think i read with 22"s it lifts the car 1" so eibachs would offset that and .3/.4 lower overall

The biggest problems with 22's:
1. They bend easier
2. They ride harsher
3. They are heavier
4. Tires are more expensive
5. They raise the car
6. Your speedometer will not be correct
7. More likely to rub

Factory tires are 245/40/19 and are 26.72" tall
A 255/35/20 is 27.03" tall, and 1% different on the speedo
A 255/30/22 is 28.02" tall, and is 5% different on the speedo

Benefits of 22's.

I'm running 20x11's front and rears and I'm getting super concave so if that's what your looking for it can be done and it won't break the bank

 

It all depends on your personal preference, but i always try to look at the car from an artistic standpoint. I think the shape of a car determines whether to go 20's or 22's. For example i had 22's on my chrysler 300 lowered on eibach springs and it looked great. On that particular car it was more of a square big bodied car so the choice was simple 20's were too small. With that said, in my opinion, 24's looked cartoonish on that specific vehicle. Now when it comes to the maxima its a sleek car with wide rear quarters. To me the car is designed to be low and agressive which lead to my decision for 20's not 22's. I think the 22's are too big for this car and add a higher profile to the car even with a drop. Just my opinion and there is no right or wrong when deciding its all about what you think looks good.

 

Its all personal preference. Im a big plus size wheels guy and if i can do 22"s. No rub with still decent (width) tire, im cool(245/30/22) biggest gripe is a noticeable hit on performance and mpg. Also with 22"s , the whole car is raised higher. so even with the sport model , not as agile/ nimble like on oem 19"s. I plan on remedying this by a eibach spring drop. Pro kits are nice, i have experience with the sportline (much lower drop and with the pro kit . Ride is pretty normal for 30/35 series tires. Sacrifice side wall/ smooth ride for more rim. Potholes and bridges everywhere i live( south louisiana ) and i still dont think its that bad. No curb checks or bends yet , but i pay close attention to where im going .

Summed up very nicely. This is the answer I'm looking for when the initial question was posed. It's about preference as with everything in life but there is a difference between preference and facts. The fact of the matter is some of the bigger rims CAN cause problems.

 

SO what did you have to do to accommodate 11's all around? Whats the widest we can go without any mods? I see sets of 20 X 10.5 for sale but didnt think they would fit in the front?

 

22" Cons: you are gona lose 30HP on the dyno. Compared to 18s.. the horsepower loss will be substantial. It will significantly outweigh everything you do to intake and exhaust.

 

The only thing I did to accommodate the 11s was roll all fenders, on coilovers, have the camber kit for front and rears, replace endlinks with Racingline endlinks that's it.. Also keeping the right tires and offsets for my setup

Excellent summary.

If you will actually be using your car for transportation, the 20" rims/tires have many advantages. But if your car is mainly for show, go with the 22" rims/tires (but with 22s, don't take it on any trips, as most roads are in terrible shape these days, and the sidewalls on 22" low profile tires offer absolutely no tire/rim protection from potholes).

 

As all have stated its a personal preference. Im running a staggered setup which looks clean and tight...front 245/35 R20. Rear 275/30 R20. Also car is lowered on Eibach Pro Street coils. This setup looks tailor made for my ride. For me, 22's dont show enough tire wall...too much rim. Tires look like rubber bands...

 

Curious to see how this setup would look.

22s are overkill IMO. That white Maxima in post 2 looks perfect.
