Service engine light
Service engine light
My 7th Gen Max has 54k and the service engine came on .. The car runs great.. Does the service light come on automatically or there could be problem ? If it came on automaticlly can I reset the computer by disconnecting simply the battery or it has to be done with dealer or hand held computer ? Some cars service engine can be earased simply by disconnecting and draining any power to its computer
First off the get the code checked, don't clear it yet....go to an autozone or advanced auto and they'll check it for free unless u have a tool to do so, might be something stupid like the gas cap not tightened properly. Just recently I had service engine light, brought it in to dealer, I forget the code but it was associated with dirty oil, changed the oil and cleared the code, and I've been good since and I do all my oil changes 3k miles but don't do much driving so idk why that popped up, either way it's been taken care of
Yeah that's what I'm going to do is check for the code ,, a buddy @ work has a scan tool for his nissan cars.. But my question still remains .. Does the light come on at a certain mileage beside any problems ?
Nissan doesn't use the SES light as a reminder for maintenance found on BMWs or the like. You'll have to pull the code and see what the issue is. You can set a reminder for maintenance, but it will not cause the SES light to turn on under any circumstance.
Yeah I wonder if they did the same like BMW ..
I didn't disconected the battery .. I wanted to find out what made it come on ... While I was driving today the light went away.. My wifes car did the same on her Altima .. Come to find out it was water in gas .. I threw a couple of dry gas bottles , after 2 days it went away and never came back on .. That was 2 years ago
Same thing just popped up on my 7th gen 2009 Maxima. Heading to a garage later to pull the codes.
I tightened by gas cap last night and had a 20 miles drive into the office. The light's still on. Should I wait to do anything with it until I get some more mileage under the belt and see if it disappears?

Light stayed on for 300 or so miles. I disconnected the negative battery terminal for 10min. The light has been off now for 2K+ miles.
Go figure.
My 'service engine soon' light came on. If it comes on blinking, the car is supposed to be towed to the dealer, but when it comes on steady, the car can still be driven until we have time to get to the dealer. Mine was thankfully on steady.
I did the usual tightening of the fuel tank cap, checked to make sure the gas tank was not near empty, etc, and then took it to the dealer. Turns out the little thin black plastic ring that holds the fuel tank cap while we are putting in gas had somehow gotten under the edge of the cap, so continuing to tighten the cap was doing nothing. My service manager found this problem immediately. No charge, and had me on my way in minutes. She is a really sharp gal.

I had that problem but mine gas cap problem was the black lanyard got trapped under the cap and give me the light. Cleared the cord from under the cap, problem went away,
SES and other warning lights
2011, 51,000 miles. My SES light comes and goes due to gas cap. For some reason it needs to be clicked tight a lot, 3-4 half turns, then the light stays off. Thinking about replacing the cap, but the one I have looks fine around the seal area and on the car.
Other warning light issues: When the weather starts to get cold out, and even when there's been a soaking rain in the summer, the traction control and the brake warning lights come on. They come and go during the winter. My guy cleared them once, said there was no problem, stay aware, let him know if ABS or braking issues happen, otherwise can live with it or change sensors. Could be a loose wire somewhere. Don't want the dash taken apart.
