Unhappy Vdc

My 2009 Maxima has started to intermittently show the VDC light along with the slip indicator light for no reason. I have not touched the button. As long as the car is running (driving or not) pressing the button has no effect (on or off). What might be going on here? It's happened more than twice now and It did it when I was driving in the snow last week, oh joy. I'm worried I might screw something up if I let it go, and besides I don't want to drive a sick car. Any help would be appreciated. Jess
