Cleaning Headliner Material

I've trolled here for a few months after getting my wifes "hand me down" Maxima.

I'm looking for tips and tricks, maybe even a magic potion to clean the headliner. The material seems tricky to get clean and I have stains ranging from Makeup to "kid marks".

Any help is greatly appreciated

The most important step is to not saturate the headliner or make it damp. Doing this will cause the adhesive holding the headliner to fail prematurely.

The easiest way is using a steamer and putting a terry towel on the tip. Terry towel has the texture to remove the stains, while the steam and towel itself will prevent saturation.

If you do not have enough to a steam machine, find an all-purpose cleaner or some type of car interior shampoo that foams. Apply onto the terry towel and twist into the headliner. As you do this, make sure it does not feel damping wet. Best to do in the sunlight so it can evaporate quickly.

Our Armada has a light color interior. At the last oil change the giant grease soaked technician was kind enough to rub his dirty head on the headliner and moonroof cover (at least they threw a paper mat over our weathertech liners).

When I got home I used a kirkland baby wipe and lightly dabbed the grease right off. No discoloration or staining whatsoever.

On youtube, Ammo NYC puts out great info on detailing. The videos are pretty long but full of useful information. You want to use a pressing + twisting motion and basically any gentle cleaner with a towel. Microfiber or terry both will work well.

But the big +1 goes to the steamer because the heat and water will bust up the stains without getting the headliner soaking wet.
