What the Y-Pipe Adds...

Back around April, I had purchased the Motordyne Maxima Art Y-pipe and the Motordyne cat-back exhaust. On the day of the install, the exhaust shop doing the install backed out of the install of the Y-Pipe citing the "legal" issues of them installing it, so they only installed the cat-back exhaust.

Well after driving around for 3 months with only half of my exhaust system installed, I finally found an exhaust shop who agreed to install my y-pipe. I'm going to share my impressions for those who are on the fence on replacing the y-pipe or aren't sure it is worth the $539 price tag for the Motordyne y-pipe.

If you read the posts on this forum, everyone will tell you that swapping out the y-pipe is one of the best performance mods for our car-- adding about 10-15 horsepower.

I can't attest to how much horsepower it actually adds, but I will tell you this--- it removes any drone in the exhaust and the car seems to accelerate more smoothly and quicker from a dead stop. Don't get me wrong, I loved how just having the cat-back exhaust gave my car a performance sound, but the addition of the y-pipe definitely added the true performance gain as well.
I can definitely tell that the exhaust gasses are passing more efficiently straight thru the pipes and even at full throttle, it sounds nice and not like an import with a fart can muffler. Gone is a slight hesitation when I would punch the accelerator-- it accelerates quickly and immediately.

I noticed that pricing is higher now on the Motordyne cat back exhaust & Art Y-pipe compared to when I bought it in April. Take my word for it-- it is worth it. Even the guy who installed the y-pipe for me said that it is a beautiful system (and he does custom exhaust work).

I have been on the fence about the after market Racingline Y -Pipe.
My main issue is the smell....

(I put a Y-Pipe on my Audi A4 years ago and afterwards although it drove great, it smelled like a school bus) The exhaust smell was so bad that I ended up eventually swapping again to a high flow cat instead of a "straight" y-pipe.

So my question ...

Now that you have the Y-Pipe installed have you noticed an increase in exhaust fumes in your cabin or when driving your Max?

Anyone can chime in ...

It doesn't erase the main cats, so there won't be a change in smell. The aftermarket y-pipes get rid of the third, unmetered, cat which doesn't really do much anyway.

Sorry for some of the sound distortion on the video, Shot it with an old Canon G12 point & shoot camera and probably put the camera too close to the pipes...

I drove around in it all day with the windows rolled down. Didn't notice any unusual smell coming inside or from the outside of the car...

Thanks for the info. I'll be more relaxed about my purchase then. I was looking in to the same exhaust for my maxima.

What differences did you notice after you installed the exhaust?

Other than the obvious sound difference vs. stock, I think the biggest difference has been the improved throttle response. When you step on the gas pedal, the car just seems to accelerate smoother and go.

Don't get me wrong, the sound of the exhaust when you're going through a tunnel or underpass is almost worth the upgrade on it's own right... LOL

I have a question for everyone and anyone. Can I put a Y pipe or something else on my Max that will increase the HP and throttle response, but not change the sound of the exhaust? Although the Max in this video sounds pretty sweet, and looks awesome, that sound is just not for me. I guess mainly I dont like the sound of exhaust systems because I used to live across the street from some Koreans that used to work on and rev their riced out Hondas 24-7 and drove me to the brink. Anyway, any info yall can give would be appreciated. I want to try to get my 2011 to at least 300HP. Some guys told me the K&N filter charger I put in adds at least 5hp which I dont believe but I could honestly tell a bit of difference after replacing the OEM air filter. Thanks in advance.

Hi Matthew, get the y pipe and leave the rest of the exhaust alone.
