What tires do you use?
I'm looking to replace the Nexens that I currently have on with something a bit more traction grabbing but still performs OK on snow/ice (I live in north kansas, and winter is coming.)
I've been looking at tirerack reviews for a few months now, the OE Goodyear RS-A's do not score well.
Compared to the scoring on these Pirelli Cinturato P7 All season Plus, which look way too good to be true for just an extra $200 per set.
Anyone care to share their experiences with tires and if the pirelli's would be a good buy? And does anyone know if the tire rack scores are linear (as in, is the hydroplane resistance of the pirellis really 67% better than the goodyears? It seems really unlikely, especially at a mere $200 price difference..)
And then there's these tires, which seem ridiculous: Michelin Pilot Spot A/S 3+ (W or Y speed rated) at only $800 for a set, which isn't even $300 more:
I feel like I'm being duped by these numbers or something..

Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 and I love them. I never hydroplane in the rain and they've been all around great tires. Hug the corners, etc. I really don't have any complaints. The tried and true knock against Hankook remains, however, that they are excellent tires and serve their purpose to a 'T' but the tread wears out fast.
I don't drive her in the winter and therefore cannot comment on snow/sleet driving with these tires but these are summer tires so I'd imagine it wouldn't be good.

I just got the Pirelli's about three days ago and I must say that so far they have been a joy to drive. I think I've logged about 500 miles on them and they have definitely been better than the Continental tires they replaced. I don't know how they'll handle against snow but they did a pretty good job in rain

Buying tires is a balancing act in choosing tire longevity with ride and handling. Generally speaking, harder compounds equal more mileage/higher treadwear# and less traction. It’s easy to build a soft compound tire with great traction. It depends on what you’re after. The challenge is building a high mileage tire with decent traction and ride. I don’t expect more than 25k out of my original equipment Eagle RS-As with a treadwear rating of 260. Of course Nissan is not too concerned with TW ratings because they’re not buying my replacement tires and the softer OE compounds generally ride better and improve cornering – which helps then sell cars. The Ventus are going to perform well with the softer compound, but with a TW rating of 320 won’t last much longer than OE. The Cinturato is probably easily a 60K+ tire with TW of 700. The Pilot Sport is in-between with TW of 500. Personally I’m going with Michelin Premier A/S, (TW=640), when the time comes, but I haven’t bought anything but Michelin tires for the last 30 years. I drove the last set of Michelin X on my pickup over 70K. Pirelli has an excellent reputation as well BTW.
I just purchased the Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 - I have only put about 2000 miles on the tires, but love them so far!! Great reviews on Tire Rack and I live in Maine so hopefully they will be good in the snow.
I have on my car Michelin Primacy MXV tires. I have had them for 105,000 miles so far and I have 5/32 tread depth left. I rotate and balance every 7,500 miles and align them every 15,000 miles. They provide good traction in snow and ice which I get here in NE Ohio ALOT. Out the door with tire protection on them was about $1,000.00 from Sam's Club. Best of luck to you in what you decide.
Agree with LSEplorer22. The Primacys were great. I wish they still made them. I find their replacement (the AS series) louder than the Primacy MX V series but a bit better in the wet. They start off with less tread (the Primacys were 11/32 and the AS were 9) so longevity is still out on that score. Both Sets of Primacys on my 09 exceeded 100,000 miles so and had at least 4/32 wish is about the minimum I like with the heavy rains here in Florida.
Tires - experience
I have had a lot of vehicles and a lot of tires....Cooper, Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli, etc.
For winter I will be using my Continental Extreme Contact...!!!! Love them! They also carry a crazy 50,000 mile warranty! Best tire, sticky to the road.
(right now i have a low profile drift tire on for summer, but will be coming off soon).
