P0021 on 2011 Maxima SV

My 2011 Maxima recently popped up with a P00021 error code. I took it in to Nissan and the mechanic told me that both solenoids were working properly but that the inner timing cover gasket needed to be replaced. He quoted me 16.8 hrs ($2,470.88 labor) and $556.00 in parts for the repair. That seems real high to me. Any suggestions on how to get this done cheaper? Thanks in advance.

Google the code and you will come up with a lot of information. I saw a Tech note on one site that said "Since the Intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or close. Before replacing the valve, change engine oil and filter and reset engine code."

$3000, definitely get a second or third opinion on costs from a reputable repair shop.

Nissan checked it out and BOTH solenoids were working. Thus the mechanic told me the inner timing gasket cover needed replacing. $3000 sounds like a lot to replace a gasket. I already flushed out the engine and changed the oil (synthetic). No dice. Error code remains.
