Forward Emergency Breaking (FEB) question

Hi Y'all,

I don't yet have a Maxima, but hope to join the club later this year with a bran new SL or Platinum. I've been reading this forum and searching around online trying to find out more about how well FEB works.

When I first heard about this feature I was super excited, but then I got to reading the fine print and was saddened to read that it doesn't really work over about 50 miles an hour. Down here in northern Florida, I spend a lot of time on the highway and am usually traveling at 70 if not up to 80 mph. Thought this feature might potentially be a real life saver but I get the impression it won't be on most of the time.

Related to that, can the intelligent cruise control be used to augment FEB, for example if the car in front of you starts to slow down while cruising at 75... does it start to put on the brakes or just let up the gas pedal a bit?

I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with this on your cars, and how well does it work?

Thanks!

If you have cruise control on, the car will come to a complete stop. It will brake very aggressive if someone slows down quick in front of you and you have cruise set. Works very well!

This has been one of the more impressive things to me about my 2016 Maxima. It is actually a multi-stage system, of which FEB is kind of the "last resort" stage.

We had a good discussion on this here a while back: https://maxima.org/forums/8th-genera...o-braking.html

I also am on highways going 70+ and the system as a whole works very well, even at that speed.
The Predictive Early Warning stage is what I see the most of. It beeps at me sometimes before I even see things slowing down rapidly several cars in front of me - if a tall truck is blocking my view, for example. I instinctively get off of the gas and get ready to hit the brakes in these cases - so that alone gives a bit of extra reaction time to slow down and avoid getting into a situation where FEB would even be necessary.

I had FEB activate once where traffic came to a very jolting halt with an accident up ahead. I most likely would have still been able to stop in time without it, but it helped by detecting the situation and applying the brakes even faster. I don't know exactly how fast we were going, but it was probably between 55 and 60.

So, all that said, I am continually impressed with how much it "sees" up ahead - even if you can't see it. It is one of my favorite features of the car.

As for the intelligent cruise control, see the second video in the link I provided above. It will apply the brakes and stop you. I will say that I don't enjoy the ICC in stop and go traffic very much. It adjusts a lot (applying brakes, speeding up, slowing down) and is kind of jerky. On interstate type of driving it's great though.

Hope that helps!

Wow, it sounds like it works pretty well. Hope I never have to find out first hand. Thanks for the insights

My impression intelligent cruise control is a lot different I think it nice and smooth 2017 PL. a lot better than my last car (2013 Honda). but I think the the FEB does not apply full brake I read it's 40% but it dose it so early that gives you time to apply the rest. oK I found it in the manual page 5-43 40% thru the ICC. but trust me it brakes hard. I let the FEB do the job in a fast stop situation and there was some brake left.
