Driving on low fuel
Driving on low fuel
Just out of curiosity I was wondering how low everyone lets their tank go? While I know it is not good for the fuel pump, sometimes you have those occasions where you just forget to fuel up sooner. Recently the lowest I went was 39 miles remaining.

I often go to the point where distance to empty is ---. I fill up and put around 17 gallons in, so I still have a gallon left, so a range of around 20 miles. I do this during city driving where I know there is a gas station every 5 miles.
In this new climate of serious storms causing downed lines and power outages, I never let my level get below a third of a tank, because service station pumps don't work when the power is out. In over 68 years of driving (yes, began driving in the 1940s), I have encountered several situations where I ended up in trouble because I had let my fuel level drop below a quarter tank. I have not let that happen in over twenty years. The last time was when I was stuck in standstill traffic on an interstate in Atlanta on a 98 degree summer day and the freeway did not move for over three hours. That is fairly normal in Atlanta. I was absolutely miserable, and almost suffered a heat stroke. I always learn the hard way.
So I'm currently on a scout camping trip to Athens TX from Houston. For a variety of reasons I've already gone through two tanks of gas. Filled up at 385 miles, about 15.5 gallons each, could have made 400 easy. And was running at 80+ a lot of the way.
Do you have the air cooled seats? Also did you use cruise control at all?
lowest was yesterday, let it go to 13 miles left. hah
No air cooled seats. Used cruise control for short stretches but it was set at 75-80, and I spent a lot of time above that. Morning drive to Houston, traffic was light and was above when not in traffic. Speed limit 75.
I hope everyone here remembers that getting more miles on a tank of gas has nothing to do with fuel efficiency. The only way to measure fuel efficiency is to divide the miles driven by the gallons used.
Letting the tank run low risks putting ourselves in a position for trouble and inconvienence unnecessarily. Not only could we end up short on fuel n a very inconvenient time or place (for instance, fueling up after dark in Atlanta is an open invitation for 'sliders' to simply hold you up or grab your car and leave. Happens EVERY evening in Atlanta. And if we wait too long and happen to run out of fuel, the added costs can also include a new fuel pump and a new catalytic converter, which is over $1000.
Have fun and enjoy his wonderful Maxima, but do be safe out there.
