Silver Paint vehicles
Greetings. I am in the market for a 17' Max (pretty deep discounts out there) and I am struggling on choosing a color. I have narrowed it down to Charcoal/Grey or the Brilliant Silver. I'm leaning toward the Grey because when I look at the silver on the hood it appears to have a blotchy or patchy appearance (when the sun is directly on it). I think this is just the nature of silver paint but wanted some feedback from those who might have the Brilliant Silver. Also really struggling between the SL and the SR. I like the 19" rims on the SR but I think I might miss the sunroof. I did have an 08' Max that had the mohawk roof on it and was fine with it. Also, I am ok with the SL rims but the 19's are a little more slick. Any help would be great, not any easy decision.
Hey Natro,
I'm sure you can get 19" rims for the SL easy enough. If you have bad roads where live, you may appreciate the SLs softer ride.
Then again, the SR definitely has more features:
Better seats
Better headlights
Paddle shifters
Active ride control
Bigger wheels

Natro 33,
Were I you...I would take a "hard pass" on the Maxima altogether. If you must have a four door car, there are alternatives out there: Honda and Toyota's newly redesigned Accord/Camry and if you want more power in the form of a V8, the Dodge Charger RT or the Charger with the "Scat Pack" are available as well. The Maxima has a lot of options BUT, it is discounted almost every year for a REASON. Read on the forum at the myriad of issues the car has had, ranging from issues with the Panoramic Sun Roof to brakes to throttle bottles to alignment issues that can't be completely resolved. In short, the Maxima has had many mechanical issues for a newly designed car...these issues are seen far more often for Maxima than with the Accord and Camry. If reliability is an issue for you (and it usually is for anyone spending good money for a new car), do your research and decide if you want to "roll the dice" on this generation of Maxima's reliability.
If you must have a Maxima, LEASE IT...DON'T BUY IT! And if you do this, get the SR trim in silver...I have a 16 silver SR...zero paint issues, easier to clean/looks cleaner longer and as silver is a neutralish color, it isn't scalding hot in the summer. The SR wheels are also nice and the stock 19 inch Goodyear tires ride well (a little stiffer than the SL 's 18 inch tires, but not intolerable by any means) and the tread has worn well and evenly thus far. Good luck with your decision.

I hear what you're saying but the Chargers have had their share of issues and they have discounts year round in order to meet sales expectations. I've heard the sun roof issues but nothing about the alignment and throttle bottles (did you mean throttle body?). I'll do my research on it. My 08' MAX had zero issues, it was a beast.

FWIW Nissan has been notorious for offering discounts. My 2016 SV MSRP was $36,400 and I got about $4,500 off that and 1.9%. I do suggest buying a year old model though. Purchased in March 2016, now KBB dealer trade-in is around $21k. Dealer sells for $24k. After the first year the depreciation levels off a lot.
The 2016 SR/SL models used run around $26k+ now. A new SR is around $33k and SL about $32k unless there are some dealer incentives I don't know about.

Hey Natro,
Take the negative comments about the Max with a grain of salt. Yes people post about their problems, but you see that on any car forum- that's what people do. A few have had major problems, but most of the problems are pretty minor. But don't take anyone's word for it, including mine. Take a few hours and read through the forums and decide for yourself if the issues are a big deal or not.
At the end of the day, it may not matter. My Azera has been in the shop 3 times for the same airbag issue, and has had some quirks and rattles similar to what I've read about here. It's the still the best car I've ever had. The style, performance, and features may more than make up for any issues you end up dealing with.
I'm going to disagree about leasing the car, at least from a financial perspective. If your the kind of person who wants to be in a new car every few years... well then ok. But from my experience, I've found I've always had the best luck buying lightly-used vehicles with a couple years of warranty left, skipping the new car deprecation hit, then enjoying several years of car payment-free service.

I have the brilliant silver, and love it. No paint problems of any kind. Nothing wrong with the gray, either. just a matter of which color you like best.
I had a panoramic roof problem, but Nissan replaced the roof at no cost. No other reliability problems of any kind in two and a half years. I love my 2016 Platinum, and had two more compliments on it from strangers Tuesday.

Thanks everyone for the quick feedback. I won't be able to do a lease because i do about 18-20k/year with work. Roads here are a little rough so I would need to test drive the SL and the SR. Both have their benefits. I am a car enthusiasts and that is why the Max appeals to me. The Accord and Camry lack inspiration (in my opinion), but make up for it in reliability. I might wait for the Accord touring 2.0t to come out and take her for a spin. I do miss my 08' MAX, should have never sold it. ARGGH. LOL

If you are a "Car Enthusiast", then you will be DISAPPOINTED with the Maxima...perhaps less so with the SR model, but nevertheless...disappointed. The Accord 2.0T is reported to be "sporty" in nature...not a "Sports Car" mind you...just as the Maxima is "sporty." Neither are "sports sedans or enthusiast cars." As I said in a previous post, if you must have a four door sedan AND you want an "enthusiasts sedan"...the MAXIMA IS NOT IT. A front wheel driven car with a CVT transmission isn't, nor will it ever be, an "enthusiasts car." If you seek a sports sedan, look at BMW, Mercedes or Audi; if you want a "Muscle Car Sedan", look at the Dodge Charger, especially those equipped with one of the V8 variants.
The Maxima, however, excels at what it is: a slightly bigger than average mid-size sedan/smallish large size sedan that is loaded with technology, equipped with a near luxury interior, has a reliable and powerful engine and engineered with a suspension that handles better than the average sedan. If viewed in this perspective, and not in the lens of being a "Sports Sedan", the Maxima excels. If however, the Maxima is purchased with the expectation to be " A four door sports car", as Nissan incorrectly describes it, one will be disappointed. Again, do your research and good luck with your decision.

I went with the SR. The upgraded headlights, cooled seats, and nicer interior outweighed the moonroof on the SL to me, and it was only about $800 more. The SR ride is quite firm for a car like this, however, so if you're after a more luxurious ride the SL or Platinum would be better.
Here is a walk aroud video I shot of a Gun Metallic Grey. Silver is a safe choice, but IMO a clean metallic grey car is much better looking

If you are looking for a striking color, or love to have your car noticed, go for the silver. But if you like to fly under the radar, or fit in comfortably at the country club, or have a conservative or cosmopolitan image, go for the gray.

I am a MAJOR car enthusiast! My wife and I have owned 36 different cars and trucks in our 47 years of driving. I have owned a Fiat, a Saab, a Mazda RX7, two Porsche 911 Carreras, two Porsche 928s, several BMW 5 series, and several BMW 3 series, several Jeep Wranglers and several Jeep Grand Cherokees. The list goes on and on. And yes, I have owned two Maximas including the current 2017. I enthusiastically enjoyed all my vehicles. Is the Maxima the best performing sports car I have owned? No, and I didn't expect it to be. Is it the best performing sports sedan I have owned? No, and again, I didn't expect it to be. Is it the "right" car for my wife and myself at the present time? Absolutely! As a "car enthusiast", I know in advance exactly what I am buying in terms of performance and handling. I have never been disappointed in my choice of cars. Each one had it's pluses and minuses and I knew of them in advance before making the purchase.
Sorry for the long post. Not trying to be rude or to hijack the thread. So, to answer the original poster's question, I vote for the silver! Good luck with your decision and I wish you many happy years of motoring!

Nice video, that color looks sick with the black spoiler and wheel package. Thank you for your input.
Thanks to all for the feedback. I really think the SR will be the way to go. I've lived without a sunroof before, and not having one would eliminate it potentially having the issues that I've seen some have been having with it. I like the upgraded headlights and the 19's, along with the other few upgrades. Regarding my statement of being en enthusiast: I should clarify that statement by saying i'm enthusiastic about an exciting driving experience. My last "exciting" car was the 08' MAX. The power band, CVT, and styling (for a sedan) got me excited to drive to and from work, and every other place we all drive each day. Since 2014 I've owned a 2014 Accord Sport with a 4 banger and a CVT, soo boring to drive, did have decent styling. Then I had a 2015 Passat TSI, it was a little bitter with the turbo but the DSG tranny was chunky and had horrible downshifting, now I have a 2016 Camaro RS 2LT with the 3.6 LGX. The car is a beast and a thrill to drive but the GM A8 tranny is plagued with problems that make the Nissan CVT look like an angel. I'm in the middle of a lemon law case and a GM buyback, yea, that bad. I love the car but the issues are mind boggling. I guess the only MAX concern I really have right now is the alignment issues, it does not seem prevalent from what I can tell, but, i'll keep researching.
Mark,
Because today is Thanksgiving...I will forgive you for being a chump and insulting me with your insinuation at a "presumptive posting and for accusing me of being arrogant. The point of my post, which you should have understood because you identify as a "MAJOR car enthusiast", was that the Maxima IS NOT SPORTS CAR and is NOT an enthusiasts driving car, no matter what Nissan or anyone else bills the car. A front-wheel driven, four door sedan with a CVT is NOT...nor will it EVER be a "Sports Sedan"...period...end of story...end of debate...end of argument.
My "presumptive posting" as you labeled it was meant to specifically point out EXACTLY what the Maxima is...which I did in the last paragraph of my initial post...and my description is accurate and valid. As you said in your post, my intention was to provide the OP with an accurate description of EXACTLY what the Maxima is, in terms of performance, driving characteristics, historical maintenance issues and historical reliability issues, especially when compared to competitors in the four sedan category. This is important information for the OP to have BEFORE he purchases a Maxima.
Enjoy your Thankgiving Mark...and enjoy your Maxima..and don' t choke on your turkey gibblets. I wouldn't want the board to "lose" your "plethora of vast car knowledge"...you are quite obviously a "Car Enthusiast."

Wow, what a presumptive posting. In the OP's first posting, he stated that he was in the market for a '17 Maxima. He wasn't asking advice on alternatives. To state that he will be disappointed in the Maxima is an unbelievably arrogant statement. YOU might be disappointed in a Maxima, but there is no way to infer that the OP will be disappointed.

Despite AG2016s demeanor of his commment, I might have to say I agree with the point he made based on your comment. If the Max does not fit you, I would look for a 16' Q50 3.0T with the Sports package no DAS. Pretty quick/fast and handles great, the 3.0TT would be better but it's prices if you can find one used are up there! Despite Accord/Camry or Altima in their highest trims and how reliable they are yada yada I just hate having a car that you see 10 of on each block, ton's in parking lots and at every stop light there is almost always a couple of one or the other or all of them!

I got a real hang up with that too. I actually like the latest generation of Accord ... and I think it can give the Max a run for its money performance wise. But geez I hate seeing everyone with the same car as me. That is probably part of e reason a hate SUVs so bad. It's like the 20xx version the station wagon.
Ditto that Monte,

That new 2.0t is no joke and even beats the previous gen V6 model Accord. And I believe even that V6 then beats the current Maxima V6. So that new 2.0t would stomp all over this Maxima. That being said. I cannot stand the back of the new Accord. It screams Civic pretty much identical. It also has ugly wheels on the Touring model. Sport model wheels are okay I suppose but not a huge fan of those either. Not a fan of the interior tablet style that looks like it was just tacked on at the last minute.
