Has nissan changed anything to fix their rust problems?
Hi all,
any info available on whether Nissan has addressed their notorious rust problems in the current generations of Maximas? Thanks for any info! |
Car has not been out long enough to know yet.

My 04 started rusting bubbles within 5 years and I was told since it wasn't "perforated" aka rusted clean through like a piece of $hit junkyard car, they wont do anything.
I'd never by another Nissan. My subsequent GM and Land Rover of all if you could believe has proven to be a far, far better and more reliable trouble free experience. |
I have a 09 I bought new and not a single rust issue. I Take care of my cars and wax n wax regularly
Just bought a 2017 new so don't expect any issues there. |
I have rust in the engine bay along all the welds had to sand it and repaint it, haven't looked under the car yet, i live on the ocean so everything rusts anyways

Had an '07 Altima SL for 10 yrs and 149,000 miles right here in the rust belt (Ohio). Never a problem with rust. I own a lift and even the underside was amazingly clean. Neighbor bought it. Had it for 2 years and another 10,000 miles. Looks as good as when I had it.

I have an '05 Maxima with about 173,000 miles on it and have never had a rust problem. And I live in the Northeast.

Thanks for all the feedback. Was wondering if there's any info on if they started to e-coat hidden steel, or dip the unibody?

I guess I have been very lucky. I have owned nothing but Maximas since fall of 1964, and I have never had a rust problem. Quite a few '04 Maximas had a rust problem on the front floorboards, because a glitch in the assembly process pinched one of the two drain tubes carrying water from the sunroof to the ground, resulting in water getting under the front mats, and it was almost impossible to get all the moisture out, so rust resulted. I caught my leak very quickly, used a flexible rod through the sunroof drain to find the point of blockage, and had it fixed. But no hint of rust anywhere on my '09 or '16.

If you buy a Nissan, I highly recommend spraying the undercarriage and wheel wells with a rubberized undercoating. I had an 02 SE and did this when new, most other peoples feet were going through the floors.....Nissan metal is garbage. I did my 2012 as well, even took out the wool sweaters Nissan puts in the rear wheel wells and sprayed the bare wells. It makes a difference and cuts the road noise a bit.
