Backing out of a parking spot and must have accelerated too quickly. The parking sensors emitted the final warning at the point of impact. I did not recall hearing the gradual increase in sound before impact. I could not have been reversing more than 2mph. No way. I backed up into a Jeep Liberty.
The Liberty-Not one scratch!!
Maxima- $$
Insurance paid $1071 including my deductible
Body Shop 1 $1700
Body Shop 2: $1700
Now here’s the real kicker. My car is pulling to the right substantially post accident. Took it to my Nissan Dealer for the valve body replacement and while in the service bay had the technician inspect the damage. Low and behold.......
"REAR RIGHT TOE AT 61 DEG, OUT OF SPECS, REAR LEFT AT 0.02 DEG. SIGNS OF DAMAGE TO REAR RIGHTFRONT LOWER LINK AND SWAY BAR BUSHINGS NOTED.
RECOMMEND REPLACE REAR RIGHT FRONT LOWER LINK , AND SWAY BAR BUSHINGS.
REPLACE REAR RIGHT FRONT LOWER LINK & SWAY BAR BUSHINGS
WITH FOR WHEEL ALIGNMENT $1524.99 PLUS TAX"
Body shop that completed the repair submitted a claim for the suspension and was denied. My turn to call them.
Wow! You really nailed that thing! I'd say that collision was faster than 2MPH. There would have been a shorter impact strike had it been going much more slowly. I don't think the suspension/alignment issue was related to this unless that rear right rim struck the liberty. Does that rear right rim show an impact damage?
My parking sensors don't always go off until I'm inches from the object (I have the sensors set to far too). Other times they go crazy when I'm parking or backing up

Sorry it happened. No such thing a a simple wack. It does appear these are some diagonal "blindspots" in the back up sensing system on these cars. The manual seems to allude to that fact as well. I also use the "birds eye view" camera to pick up on these obstacles but also find myself going much slower in reverse.

On the 2019, have you noticed emergency braking kick in?
Mine has stopped the car cold a couple times in my driveway.
Our rental Pacifica also had it - brakes are stronger than the tires as we skidded top a stop twice - from 2-3 mph.
The right rear rim has a slight 2 inch “scratch” on the lip or edge but i think that has been there for quite some time. I tend to park close to the curb on end spots to distance myself from the car next to me.

I didn’t know you can adjust the sensor distance or sensitivity?

Yes, under parking aids in vehicle settings you can set the distance to close or far. I don't know what constitutes as far though. Like I said, I still have to be pretty close to something for them to go off

I have not experienced the emergency rear braking on the 2019 yet. Glad to hear yours works as it should and I do think the 2019s have an extra set of rear bumper sensors (more than my 2016 did). Do you think that was a "stealth upgrade"?

I dunno. The I thought I saw - but can't find right now - that the specifications on NissanUSA.com still have "only" four total (2 and 2).
But for the cross-traffic + emergency rear braking, since there's no camera**, you really need at least four in the back (I think Porsche, Audi, BMW and Mercedes have six).
** realized I'm an idiot - there is a camera, but you still need all four for the whole system to work.

There is no way the OP was going only "2 mph" to get that kind of damage and without the sonar going off ...
And yes, most bumper repairs are ridiculously expensive no matter the make and model. I paid that kind of money to have a 2000 Camry bumper fixed more than 15 years ago. Nothing new.
ok. Thank you.
The sonar did go off just before impact but it was too late.

Interesting. I too backed-up into a Jeep (I think Compass...) and it felt quite hard. No scratch on the Jeep, and my bumper got a barely visible pimple (see Photo 1)
Photo 1: Aftermath of backing-up into a parked Jeep
A few days later, I was rear-ended by a box truck, on an interstate, so hard that my cell phone flew from its holder, hit my wife in the forehead (gave a nice red bump), and landed in the back seat. I thought for sure I was totaled. To my surprise, the damage was minimal (see Photo 2). There was more damage to the truck (Photo 3).
I backed into the front of a truck a few months ago. No parking sensors on mine (base model) and I think the camera is very deceptive. The predictive lines showed me clearing it. Luckily, the damage to my car is barely visible and to the truck, there's no damage at all.
