I've been hearing about Amsoil being a great for these garbage cvts. Has anyone tried this and what were your results? Thanks so much...I appreciate all you 8th gen lovers
Why do you refer to the CVT as "garbage"? Eighth gen cars are capable of:
0–60 mph: 5.9 sec.
1/4 Mile: 14.4 sec. at 101 mph (163 km/h), while returning mileage ratings exceeding 30 mpg/ highway. CVT failures in the Maxima have been minimal at best, with no recalls or service bulletins, other than one regarding a procedure to clean the transmission fluid cooler. If you were aware of a "garbage" CVT, what possessed you to buy the car? My 2007/ 2010/ 2014/ 2017 and current 2020 have experienced NO CVT issues, while racking up over 450K in miles. The prescribed CVT fluid changes were carried out according to the Nissan maintenance schedule, using their NS-3 fluid...Amsoil makes excellent products as well, perhaps that's what your specific "garbage" tranny will require?

if you label the CVT in this car as garbage, then you are listening at the wrong places. Unless Nissan tells you to put Amsoil in your CVT, I would suggest against it.
CVTs get the power to the wheels in a different way and it does take some getting used to. For me the MPG payoff is outstanding. Over 33 MPG on the open road @ 75 mph.
This is my 3rd CVT in a Maxima. Right now my 2019 seems to be the best of the series. Denoose says the rest very well.

Amsoil = snake oil. Don't believe the hype. Follow the Nissan recommended service interval using the Nissan recommend products. This will give you the best service life.

I wouldn't call Amsoil snake oil. The definition of snake oil is something that is useless, deceitful, doesn't do with it claims to do. Although I would likely stick to OEM fluid for these CVT's, I wouldn't hesitate to use Amsoil either. I'm sure Amsoil's fluid is comparable to OEM fluid.

Amsoil makes good stuff.....! I do not use it because it is very expensive.....But I certainly was using it.
I stand by my comment. Not saying Amsoil isn't a good product, but I don't think it's the superior product they claim. And certainly not worth the expense. At least not to me.
I have a 2017 Maxima SR and a 2015 Altima. Man those cars are night and day - acceleration, handling, transmission performance in the Maxima are a huge step above. 2nd Maxima and 1st Altima with no CVT issues. To echo @denoose , I am totally happy with the performance and mileage of the Max as I am more likely to pass than be passed. Also, the value/performance ratio with the Maxima is hard to beat in my opinion and if/when they discontinue the Maxima, Ill probably serious consider the New Pathfinder (guess I'll be an SUV sheep). The value/performance ratio just isn't there with the other sedans.....Like the new Acura but man thats 50 grand for the Type S, Kia Stinger is close to $50, Infiniti sedans have lost there way IMO and the interiors are fugly....would consider the Accord but those are a dime a dozen and Camry's are too bland for my taste. Annnyyywwaayyy, too answer the original question, I'm using the recommended fluid by Nissan. I'm a boring, stock, rule following dealer guy and with the coupons they constantly send the cost is negligible IMO.
I have an 07 maxima with 112k miles. I want this car to last another 5-6 years and planning on changing the cvt fluid (never done before when I bought it at 104k miles). Do you have any tips on prolonging the life? I never floor it from a dead stop but do tend to have fun when I can.
I haven't had any luck finding the transmission filter for the 07 maxima. The pic below is what its supposed to be for the 07 from a YouTube video but every website even autozone and oreilly have a different ones even though it says it fits?

Amsoil is way overpriced! Like the above poster said I use Idemitstu CVTF. And there are two CVT filters. The one inside the pan is more of a strainer you could just clean it if it is clogged. The CVT filter to change is like an oil filter and is attached to the CVT behind driver's side wheel well.
