Well, as many of you know, I recently installed some turd gen Koni reds on my car.
Few days ago, I noticed the driver's side was making some funny noises and riding strangely--it was mimicking the behavior that my blown strut had previously exhibited.
So, I take a look.
It's not pretty.

Think what happened is that the threads on the Koni were a little screwed up from the strut banging around in my trunk (I remember they were, but I thought it'd be okay). My torque wrench clicked prematurely as the nut hit the gayed up threads and I presumed it properly tightened. Of course, there was a good 7mm or so of thread left before it was actually all the way on.
So, hitting 400 miles worth of bumps at ~90-100mph took its toll, and the threads sawed their way through the strut insulator, until they necked themselves down to what you see here.
The damage? Well, I ordered a new insulator for $28, but I need to find a new Koni. That one, with 400 miles on it, is pretty much toast unless we can find an interesting way to retap it.

When we were reassembling the struts today to free up the lift on my buddy's shop, I fully compressed the Koni that WASN'T fubar'd to adjust it, and fiddled around with it. Well, whaddya know, now that strut refuses to damp on the rebound stroke.
Compress it and it resists, extend it and it comes right out.Koni is getting an angry call tomorrow. Both of these have less than a thousand miles on them.
Well, while I'm somewhat bewildered as to why that Koni failed, I have to say my faith in the company is at least somewhat restored.
Koni's warranty policy: They sell you another one at half price, you send yours back. If it's decided that you weren't a moron and it's covered by warranty, then they refund you the entire cost. Otherwise, you still get it at half price.
