Clearing ABS codes help please

Hi Guys, I've checked the FSM and it is a little vague. My buddy had a code for the ABS control unit pop up so we went to a wrecker and swapped the ABS unit. All the fuses and relays were found to be OK. So after swapping the unit the FSM describes how to clear the codes. It says to ground pin 8 on the OBD2 port, but when we did that nothing happened. The FSM shows you where pin 9 is, so we tried pin 9 and popped 2 fuses. So, does anyone know how to do this properly?

I was wondering if I am supposed to put a jumper between pin 8 & pin 9 to read the code then reset it.

BTY this is for a 2001 Maxima
