its a high compression motor because it is not boosted from the factory.

IIRC our compression is 10.0:1 which is on the higher side.

Yes it is 10.0 to one which is reasonably high. The muscle cars in the late 60s/early 70s were only about 10.25 or 10.5 to 1 on average.

You sure about that? I think only a select few muscle car engines could actually run that high of compression back then

Mopar compression

Just whipped out my Cuda book (used to have one). 1970 Mopar 383 and 340 had 10.5 to 1, while the Hemi had 10.25 to 1. There were also 9 different engines available for the 1970 barracuda. Amazing stuff. So I don't think high compression was that rare back in the muscle car heyday.

I was guessing the hemi could run the high comp because of the head design. Could the others from the big 3 do that also? I think most makers had their select hp V8s that ran high compression. I just couldn't remember how common it was.

I only know a bit about Mopars. They were still using leaded gas to help with resisting knock too. After 1971, forget it though, all makes got much tamer.

So yeah, the Maxima has 'spectable compression. It amazing me how well it holds up under boost considering this fact as well.

VQ30DE=10.0:1
VQ35DE=10.3:1

And yeah, it is surprising how well the VQ handles boost/nitrous when well tuned. More than enough to make you wish it weren't unequal length axel FWD.

Jcalw^^ for the VQ CR's.

2 Da .. Just b/c it's not boosted from the factory doesnt mean it's high comp.

The CR for a '70 SS Chevelle was 10.5:1

The CR on my dad's 1973 Trans Am is 13:1

Yeah muscle cars had high comp originally. Gas was way better back then. It was **** cheap, too.

Then we all know what happened. The mid 70's to late 80's mostly sucked for cars.

theres lots of hondas running 12:1 in Houston. They can run 10:1 on 87 so i guess its easier for them to run 12:1 on 93.

My dad's 1967, 2-door Mustang sedan, came with a 390 cu. in. engine rated at 320 hp. Its compression ratio was at least 10.25 to 1. The highest gas mileage it ever got on the highway was about 13.5 miles to a US gallon and under 12 was routine. Mind you I used to drive it like I stole it.

About the muscle car thing.....leaded gasoline had much higher knock resistance due to the lead. So it was easy to have higher compression with the better fuel.
