Non LSD 5th gen tranny swap question?
Alright guys, I've been looking all over the org but cant seem to get this answered so here goes: If you're getting a non LSD 5th gen tranny to go into a 4th gen max, do you need new axles or just a 5th gen clutch kit in addition to the actual tranny?
Its seems everyone else that is doing this is going for the LSD tranny which is why I ask.

-Not everyone is going for the LSD tranny, since it is so rare to find.
-For the open-diff 5th gen tranny I dont THINK you have to change the axles, I may be wrong
-Altho a 5th gen clutch is considered an upgrade to us 4th geners (I should know, I'm braking mine in :-D), you can stick any aftermarket 4th gen clutch upgrade to it, so you're not restricted to just a 5th gen clutch

It should bolt right in. You may want to watch the speed sensor to make sure it is right but other than that it should be same same connections.
BTW Your shifter will be a lot farther back if you didn't know that.

yeah, from what I've read, I might need to get a new STS if its too much
95BLKMAX, did you do swap or did I miss s'thing?
ti2tmax: I dont know about the 6 speed tranny fitting into a 4th gen but dont quote me on that...I was going on abou the 5 speed...

I test drove a Sentra SER SPEC V before I bought my Maxima. I loved the 6 gears on it and was thinking about a swap but figured their setup wouldn't handle the power from our cars(even though they aren't that much higher HP). But then I thought about the 5th gen 6spd. The shifting linkage will be much longer? Or the shifter itself will have to be much farther back...?

Woow chill with that 6spd swap, lol. "Tilleys99" did that and he said it wasn't worth all the work. I thought you were refering to the 5th gen 5spd tranny, not the 5.5gen 6spd tranny.
Either way, yes the 6spd does bolt up (same bolt pattern), you have to grind something down at the bottom of either the tranny or the block for it to fit tho IIRC. As far as linkages, idk how the shifter would sit, since the 6spd tranny has CABLE linkages.
Idk what clutch you'd have to use for the 6spd tranny swap. If you use the 4th gen flywheel, then you could install any 4th gen clutch to it, BUT the center of the 4th gen clutch DISC has a certain amounf of slines (sp*) and its a certain diameter. I am not sure if it would be compatable with the input shaft of the 6spd tranny. Now, you COULD just use a 3.5 flywheel and use a 5.5 gen clutch to it and rule out that problem. I ASSUME it just bolts on, but then you might have an issue with the CPS on that side.
Just as a side note, the 3.5 flywheel is one heavy ****, lol. Also, know that a 6spd tranny will increase the drivetrain power loss due to the more rotational mass.
The person to ask about this would have to be Tilley. PM him or call him to his shop (phone # is on his sig). He could tell you all about it
EDIT= and for an open-differential 5th gen tranny (5spd, remember 5th and 5.5 gen, different trannies) no you do not need to change your axles if your 4th gen also has an open-diff 5spd. "Nismology" as proof, he has a 96 with an 00 non-lsd 5spd and the 96 axles bolt up to it just fine

exactly what I was trying to find out... just need a tranny man!lol! Just something that's "better" but mostly something that will just bolt up!
On a side note, is there really any benefit to a 6 spd, with our motors anyway?

fuel milage, lower rpm in top gear (6th vs 5th) on the highway.
as stated earlier the 6 sp tranny is a cable linkage and i believe there are some issues with the seedo. speedo signal comes from the Vehicle speed sensor on the tranny in the 4th and 3.0L 5 th gens. on the 3.5L 5th and 6th gens the speedo signal comes fromt the abs sensors i think.
