VQ35DE & 4th Gen 5MT

I didn't want to threadjack the "gearbox numbers" thread.

How many of you guys that have done the 3.5 swap are running the 4th gen 5spd? Did you do anything to prep the tranny for the 3.5 (cryotreat etc...)? Are you shifting any nicer to "keep 3rd gear alive"?

Reason being is that a 5th gen 5spd is damn near impossible to find in the whole SE of the country (www.car-parts.com). AL had 2 when I looked, one was "parts only". I found one good one up in NC for around a grand (forget that, shipping would own me, I'm not driving up there either). Looks like I'll be sticking to my tranny until I can get either a 5th gen tranny or a Alty 3.5 5Spd tranny.

BTW, you think a Stage 2 Spec clutch would be overkill for a 3.5 (keeping it N/A) or would the Stage1 Spec or Exedy work just fine?

No clutch is overkill IMO. I got a clutchnet 6-puck and that is usually a boosted clutch only. But it transfers the torque gradually so it relieves some of the shock from the tranny.

You can't use the 02+ altima tranny, it'll bolt up to the VQ but it's drive by wire.

I blew mine but it's driver error (2nd instead of 4th) and it had 10 years and almost 100k on it. I'm just gonna learn to rebuild it myself and save the dough.

Yea I forgot which of you was the one that blew the tranny. Ouch 2nd instead of 4th, yea you can't buff that one out, lol. Hold on tho, drive-by-wire? but its a 5spd, how is that so? Sorry if its been discussed before and I missed it.

Nismo what clutch are you running? Its not listed on your cardomain

Negotiate the price down. I paid $850 shipped from Oregon to Illinois for a 00 trans with 35K on it and a six month warranty.

It's an eBay special Exedy clutch for now... It doesnt do too well holding the power.. I'm going to go with a Clutchnet 6 puck once this one is gone.

Good choice. Then you'll be able to do redline clutch dumps on slicks And remember to tell them to set it at 50% of resistance over stock (good for 300-350 ft-lbs of torque).

You mean it is adjustable? Or different stages of the 6 puck?

You just tell them how much torque you want it to support, from stock (205 ft-lbs) to 600 lbs-tq (crazy people like Mardi and Neal). I would take the same as me (50% over stock), it's very drivable (but grabs like a ****). It aint cheap (around 400$ shipped) but it's worth the money.

yea the ebay exedy don't hold power well at all, it in my max currently and it can't hold a 75shot down the track and I only had it for about 20-25k miles. Good thing I have a Spec Stage 3 on the way.
