Help with MSD 8950

hey guys.. i am running an MSD 8950 rpm switch for my 00vi swap.. and i connected the rpm switch according to the wiring diagram on their website..

red-->cig lighter positive
black-->cig lighter negative
yellow (normally open)-->vias control negative
white--># Pin on ECU harness (tach)

well once i got everything connected i noticed that my VIAS still isnt opening.. i test the VIAS before installing the IM but sucking on the VIAS port above the plug.. and the control arm moves and stays there.. so i know that is not the problem.. so i am assuming it has something to do with the rpm switch.. i have checked the postive and ground with a test light.. and also checked the tach cable by connecting one side of the test light to ground.. and the other the the tach wire and when i do that my tach goes dead.. so i know i am using the right wire.. any suggestions guys?? i dont know if this thing is bad or i am doing something wrong.. thanks in advance..

If you had the digital MSD 8969 I could help you. It reads out RPM, is infinitly adjustable etc.

First I would hook a meter to the output of the rpm switch and see if it switches to ground when you hit the set RPM, if that is ok then connect the vias to ground and see if the switch operates.

Not too difficult to troubleshoot.

yeah i looked up the MSD 8969 and saw that it reads a variety of signals for the tach wire.. although i dont think mine does.. i called msd and they told me that the signal i needed for the rpm switch to work was a "12 volt square wave" not to be mistaken with a 12 volt source.. its still a negative terminal just with a "12 volt square wave" signal.. i just tried callin the dealership.. and the guy kept repeating to me not to use a power wire.. obviously he didnt understand what i was talking about.. anybody know what type of signal comes from the #5 pinout of the ecu harness??

hey do me a favor and post how that switch works ok? I'd like to know what the difference is between that and the 8969? Just that there is no digital screen? Can it be set?

it would be easier to go to msd.com.. but i beleive the only difference.. is you have a digital read out for the tach.. yours accepts a variety of tach signal inputs (mine only accepts one).. yours you can manually set the activation point (mine you have to buy pills).. yours you can use as a window switch (mine you cant)..

Yeah I'm looking into that. I have everything lined up to buy for the swap and the switch will be the only part left to find. I dont know what to do really. I want an easy install and just to make sure it shifts correctly. I dont know if I would like some kind of display or not. The digital is nice and I would like to be able to set it that easily. Never looked into the summit tho. Would like to find a V-AFC II if I could too haha

yeah the vafcII would be nice.. i want one of those now.. so i can go have it tuned.. but just dont have the money right now.. it will come later though.. but if you have the money that would be the way to go.. cause after you get it tuned and everything you could easily pull another 10-15 hp out of it.. anyways.. goodluck with the swap.. just out of curiosity which way are you going with the swap

4th LIM, 4th rails & injectors, 5th cover and coils, 4th IACV, pathy tb, 5th egr. Plus whatever switch I get. My setup doesnt really need the v-afc 2 now so if I find one for cheap I'll go for it.

Is this the correct summit switch?

Model #- SUM-830449

I want the MSD 8969 but I dont know if I want to spend the $100 for the digital display if the summit does the same thing and if I might get the V-AFC II later.
