rebuilding 3.5L
hey guys, i got an 03 maxima and have the oil burning issue wit my car. it has over 80k miles and i am out of warranty. so my solution to this problem is to rebuild the engine. i love the car and the power and torque it has so i'm not too willing to sell it unless i get a really good price for it since everyone knows that nissans dont hold their value too much.
anyways... i was wondering if anyone has rebuild theirs or rebuild one before? and if so what did you do and did you get any gains compare to stock???

these engines are a dime a dozen. just go to car-part.com and order a used one from there. When I did my 3.5 swap, I got a 05 maxima engine with 800 miles on it for $1000 shipped to my door.
How much oil is it burning? These engines tend to use more oil than average to begin with as has been discussed ad nausem on the org.

mine burns about 2qts every oil change, i use to use mobile1 now i have switch over to castrol since i heard the the mobile1 can be the cause of the oil burning since the mobile1 is so thin compared to other oils. so i'll see on my next oil change if i'm still burning a lot of oil. i plan on rebuilding the engine with aftermarket parts. hopefully to get more hp out of it. i want to keep it NA since it will be more reliable then a FI car.

Even our 2003 Frontier SC, which pulls the '99 on a trailer, and 2000 Xterra and 2001 Pathy and 1993 Nissan pickup don't need any extra between changes.
I would consider the "Mobil1 causes oil burning" to be bogus.

Same with my 2000 Maxima driven by our eldest daughter, who drives back and forth to Dallas a lot.

My old VQ30 didnt consume one bit of Mobil1 oil for the 50k miles I used it. Now my VQ35.... it looses oil but through blow-by, it doesnt burn it. I know its blow-by because I have a clear oil catch can inline on the PCV valve-IM.
You might have it confused since the oil puddles in the IM and when you floor it the incoming air might take it with it into the cylinders, hense you see smoke in the back and think the motor is burning oil... Just something to think about.
Take out the VIAS power valve on the side of the IM and peek inside. If you see oil settled at the bottom of the IM's plenum, try to put a catch can in-line on the PCV system, and see if it works :-)
