Gauge cluster options

My 350z tranny does not have a speed sensor like say, a 4th gen 5-speed. Does anyone know where the S13 gets its speed signal from? The diff? Mechanical signal I think?

If so what options do I have? Theres a 2001 maxima gauge cluster available in a junkyard just half a mile from my house. I want to use it because Thaniel (who swapped a DE-K in his RX-7) used a 2000 maxima cluster. But I dont know how he did it if theres no speed signal on the tranny.

Am I forced to rely on older clusters like say, a 3rd gen 92-94 SE cluster?
