Just curious, how much do those cost new? If I were doing a 6-speed swap Id swap it onto a 2002-2003 Spec V transmission. 4.42 HSLD.

I believe it's just shy of a couple hundred dollars. Spec V tranny is a good idea. Much shorter FD

Do you think the stock maxima 6-speed final drive is too long?

4.42? Everywhere I've read says the Spec V Final Drive is 4.133

I actually prefer it that way because of the gas mileage, but for performance purposes, the Spec-V's shorter FD is optimal.

2002 6-speed VQ35 FD: 3.81
2003 spec-V FD: 4.133
2002 spec V has a 4.4 something FD which is REALLY short

awesome, thanks for clearing that up.
Damn, you 5th genners have a long final drive!
And I'm with JClaw on the Spec V transmission especially since it's a lot easier to mate a 6speed to a Spec V trans if you want HLSD than trying to find an HLSD Maxima trans.

And it's not hard at all to use the maxima's bell housing with the Spec-V's internals, so IMO it's one of the best options out there for 6-speed swaps especially considering you can find a spec-v transmission for hundreds less than a maxima tranny in a junkyard.

Bingo. And you can choose between 4.13 and 4.42 depending on your powerband, both of which are upgrades. It was def on my 'to do' list before I sold my max.
