Ive just about finished up a project involving the removal of my engine. The engine is back in the car, and i started it back up for the first time. The car starts great and runs just like before. Now, however, if i remove the key to turn off the car it just keeps running. I disconnected the battery and it still ran then shut off after about 10 seconds. This shutoff also happened to occur right during the time we were messing with the wiring harness that attaches to the positive side of the battery (the one with the red flip top that you normally place over the positive terminal). Im in school right now, and trying to go back and forth every day to finish this project. I will work on it more tomorrow after i get out. If anyone has ever ran into this situation, or might have some good ideas as to what may be wrong, please chime in. Thanks guys.

 

Just some more info. When i connect up the battery, the fuel pump sounds like it starts running immediately and never shuts off. Maybe I mixed up a couple clips or something on the wiring harness? I am assuming this has something to do with the car continuing to run. Also, possibly something to do with the ignition?

 

a project removing the engine and putting it back? Ok did you do anything to the engine or just in-and-out of the engine bay? Usually exxessive carbon is to blame for an engine that stays on for a few seconds after taking the key out.

If you didnt do anything to the engine, then..... Hmmm,so you hook up the battery again and you year the pump start. Is the key in the ON position when you do this or is the key out? If the key is in the ON position then its fine, the pump is just priming. If the key is out and the pump is priming, then something is definatly wrong. IIRC the pump gets its 12v from either the ECU or the Ignition switch, so if the key is out, it should NOT be getting power.

As far as what clips you could have mixed up (assuming this is what happened) thats hard to say. Nissan made thier connectors so that (for the most part) they only fit to the one in the immediate area that it belongs to.

EDIT- take a look to see if you might have smached the motor/tranny into a harness and you might have a short somewhere thats causing the pump to remain on. Also, did you check for any codes?

 

sounds like your ignition switch is staying on, even when you turn the key off. I am not sure what would cause this but from your description it sounds like you ignition is not turning off.

 

The project was just an engine removal and reinstallation. The only thing i changed mechanically is that i removed the EGR system. Im def gonna check it out more when i get home. But yeah, the pump turns on as soon as i connect up the battery (without the key in). Then i can take the key out and it will continue to run indefinately until i mess around with the battery.

its not the starter thats staying on. Its the whole motor that keeps running as if the key was still in the ignition

 

Like cardana24 said it sounds like the ignition switch. When it's in the on position it sends the "on" signal to the ECU which sends a ground signal to the ECCS relay (energizing it) which sends battery power to the ECU which then energizes the fuel pump relay and sends power to the other sensors. Try swapping it out with a friend's or something.
