Got Problems??
Got Problems??
hey guys.. first off the only reason I am posting this in the all motor section is because I started having all these problems about a month after i completed my VI swap..
I have a 97 with ~155K..
So... with that said.. I have been having a number of different problems with my car.. Like i said when i first did the swap i didnt run any codes at all.. and so i thought everything was great.. then i started throwing a code everyonce in a while for my Cam Position Sensor.. and then about a week later it started having troubles starting.. it would crank and crank like it wasnt getting fuel.. so i knew it was time to take a look at my CPS.. I got out my FSM and checked everything out.. everything seemed to be fine.. but the problem still would get worse.. so i ordered a new one from DaveB, installed it.. couple days later, same problem.. So the only thing i could figure is since i did my VI install i had to relocate my ground for my main engine harness.. normally it mounts in 2 spots on the lower IM well since i flipped it for the swap.. I ran a single 10 guage wire around the lower and bolted it down.. and then clamped all the grounds for my wire harness to that wire with a bolt, 2 washers and a nut.. The best i could do without soldering.. So i figured maybe i wasnt making a good ground.. so i took all that apart and redid it and cleaned everything up and put some vaseline on it all (for corrosion).. It ran ok for about a week..
then I started pulling a MAF sensor code.. and it spit out all the symptoms other ppl have had with their MAF's when they go bad.. acts crappy once completely warmed up.. sputtering idle, wont rev above 2.4K.. so i checked out the plug and and wiring harness for the plug since its a lil tight with the 'custom' intake setup i have for my VI.. and redid somethings so it released some slack on the harness.. it ran fine for 2 days.. then all over again.. checked the plug to make sure it was receiving correct voltage and ground.. everything checked out.. still had the problem.. Bought a used 98 MAF w/ ~71K from the local salvage yard.. redid all the wiring harness around the MAF plug to make sure everything was intact.. Put it all back together.. Thing runs great like when I first did the swap.. Still no code.. and no stalling due to MAF failing.. But..
The morning before i bought the new MAF i went to crank it.. It would crank fine.. and the second the engine would start and the starter isnt needed anymore.. it would just die.. so i held down the pedal and it started and ran.. let go... died.. did it again and held it for ~30-45 sec... let go and it idled out like it should.. replaced the MAF.. next morning same thing with the new MAF.. the car runs fine tho.. I drive ~40 min to school and no code.. no problems..
This all happened within the past month.. and I think its a little too coincidental that I keep pulling codes for sensors failing.. what am i missing guys? i know the MAF was bad.. but the Cam Position Sensor wasnt.. but why am i having a problem now on cold starts.. I am waiting to pull a code for my TPS now.. that would be the next thing on the list since between the 3 (MAF, CPS, TPS) is how my car adjusts a/f.. I just want to quit working on my car for a lil while.. and enjoy the VI haha.. thanks in advance guys.. sorry for the novel..

update..
after i drove it for a full day (after MAF replacement) it finally through a code.. 0302 EGR High/Lo Flow.. but after sitting at school all day it didnt hesitate to start.. It cranked right up without me having to hold down the pedal... any suggestions or advice?

The part where it died. That sounds like a vac leak. I have one, and it starts right up when cold, however when warm it sometimes wavers and dies after starting.
Ive got a spare TPS if you need it.
Also, maybe some sort of O2 reading error? Not sure, just throwing a suggestion out there along with the A/F ratio sensors.

thanks for the TPS ill hit you up it mine mysteriously goes..
see mine does the complete opposite.. it only has the starting problem when its dead cold.. after it warms up for about 1-2 min.. it acts fine.. no problems whatsoever..
but since it finally threw the egr code it hasnt done the dying thing.. its still a lil shaky on idle when cold but.. it doesnt die.. my car is possessed hahaha

Well after the 00VI swap, most cars have problems with initial cold starts. Check vacuum leaks, make sure your IACV is all right, and hope for the best. Typically, however, cold cold starts take a try or two. I've only had problems with <20 degree weather, but it's something to think about.
i have a problem can anyone help me out. i have a 97 max with 190k+ miles. i have problems getting the car to start whenever the car is cold or has been sitting for atleast 4 or 5 hours. the engine turns but i have to turn the key about 4 or 5 times then it starts. i have cleaned the iacv and the tb. i checked the sensors and fuel injectors. i havent thrown any codes. battery is new. i have a small oil leak but nothing major. Are there any suggestions????
