A/F thats best !?
A/F thats best !?
Buddy just picked up a Wideband with dataloging...
Going to get the car street tuned and i wanted to know what the most power making AF i should aim for ?
The cars a 03 6mt I/H/E/Cams/SSIM .... currently im street tuned @ 12 A/F @ WOT. It riches out up top a bit and goes down to 11.5ish after 5.5k ....
I was thinking 13 A/F @wot would make the MOST power ... not sure.
What do you all motor guys tune at and where have you seen the best results.
Im tunning with the Apexi Neo.

Every car is different but I try to keep my afr 13.0-13.4
Never trust the butt dyno.lol
I ran 12.8afr past 5k until a monte carlo ss stayed next to me
Bumped it up to 13.6ish & he didnt have a chance (@ the track)
.
Good luck

Dan and I tunned my car around 14.6. After reading those articles I'm worried about engine temps. Hopefully I get to a dyno soon and run on a lower AFR to compare. Thank god for a Wideband, save's paying $160/hr lol.
Kev I replied to your email, you're getting WOT mixed up with closed loop cruise/partial throttle I think. Under WOT I tuned your base file for mid-high 12's. You should see mid 14's most of the rest of the time, which is normal and completely safe. If you're seeing 14's under WOT then you have an issue that's sprung up, such as a fuel pump that's not keeping up, I know I had to eventually change mine out with that engine.
I just bumped up my AF from 12.0 @ WOT to 13.5 @ WOT... and it made a HUGH diffrence it feels like a whole diffrent car... my buddies car wrx(modded) use to stay neck and neck with me (at the track ofcoarse) and now i leave him by 2 cars ! lol...
Cant wait to get on a dyno and see how it will do with 14.0 A/F ...

BUMP...
I did notice the car got alot stronger from me making it run a little leaner then before..14 @wot..... but while reading around i noticed a few peopel running 14.5 @ wot.. and getting good results on the 3.5L .... isnt 14.5 a little to LEAN for this motor ?

I do believe that you saw a gain going from 12.0 to 13.5 because 12.0 is too rich, but going from say 13.0 to 13.5 is a really negligible difference. The bulk of the gain comes from getting out of the low 12's and at least to the mid-high 12 area. I have seen this myself tuning on a dyno, and not just on my own car.

It is WAY lean to make optimal power. You noticed it where, on the butt dyno? Please don't be fooled... 14's will not give you optimal power (torque actually) on an N/A engine running gasoline. That I am 100% certain of, and if you don't believe me go study up on engine dynamics/combustion science and read some books on tuning. If you see a positive change (with hard data on a dyno) it's most likely that something else changed at the same time, likely air temps/heat soak, or air density (e.g. - a lot of dyno shops don't exhaust the exhaust properly and it recirculates and mixes back into the air in the dyno cell, reducing the charge density, almost like an EGR effect but not as concentrated).

Well i personally have not tunned my car to 14.5... but i read that 96sleeper had his car on 14.5-7 and was makign decent power... thats why i asked. Im cureently anywhere from 13.3-14.2 under WOT... i cant get it steady ..Maybe because i have cams ? not sure... i just dont have time right now to hit a dyno and tune like id want to.

That is where my car was before I tuned it. It was way too lean for power and safety. I found max power around 13.0 to 13.2 just like most everyone. I think I remember picking up 4-5 hp from adding fuel to bring it down to a good A/F.

This has been answered before, take it to a dyno and see what works best for you.
