The Definite BBMAF Thread
I think we should sticky all the compiled information about BBMAFS. Similar to the Cam specs we should get pictures and the dimensions of various MAFs.
My secret motivation to this thread is to clear up confusion. I bought a LR MAF on ebay only to find out that it's the exact same ID as my 2k1 maf. Now I don't know whether that's how it's supposed to be or if it's because I replaced my MAF with an Autozone one like 2 years ago. 4.6L LR MAF ID was 2.5x" OD close to 3" 2k1 Maf and Injen Adapter plate ID also 2.5x" OD close to 3" EDIT: The correct LR Maf is for the 4.4l |
Weird, post pics of this alleged LR MAF.
One way to ensure it's the right one is also to cross reference it to an M62 MAF. (BMW). From what I recall too is the LR HSE model. I find it strange the 4.4L version wasn't the correct unit. Where (eBay seller) did you order this from? perhaps you need the 4.6L piece. Comparing the OEM and correct LRMAF together is laughable, the OEM will literally fit inside the LRMAF if it wasn't for the sensor bolt pattern on top. The ID of the LRMAF is ~ 3.25". |
Other than LR maf what else are ppl using??? Ill be messing with intake stuff soon. seems that 3.5 tubing and lr maf are good as it gets? What about a 3.5 maf to match the 3.5 piping?

There's a Bosch unit for a Mustang, the 99+ 4.6L that has 260 hp. It's a 77mm unit. knight could make you one (76.2mm). IMO, the LRMAF + 3.5" tubing is the best for us (02-08VQ35). BUT, as you've noted in your swap thread the TB and A35IM port are quite a bit larger, even larger than the L32 Altima. So who knows about you man. |

Im thinking of using the LRMAF and 3.5 intake tubing, when i do it. And i totally agree the 09 motor might benefit from even larger than this. I seen that site has 4.0 piping also. All i know is the stock maf and intake is probably killing my power right now. |

It is pretty much an exact OEM 2k1 replacement only it has the thermistor integrated and has a a clampable end instead of the bolt pattern. I guess what i'll do is I'll machine a socket for the maf onto the silicone intake tubing... |

I'm gonna build something like knight_xyz did out of the existing silicone intake pipe. My uncle has a 2 axis CnC so it shouldn't be a problem making that little maf socket and welding it onto the SiliconeIntake tube |
^ sounds interesting. I would be interested in a 4" intake with built in maf adapter. I think it has to be a certain height off the tube tho.

this may be a stupid question, but is this only applicable for 5th gen MAF's? I have an A32 MAF set up that I would like to run a larger MAF housing on.

I just bought an aluminum version of that off 97Maximus here with a 3" MAF screen that was pressed in before the sensor. There's definitely some mid-high end gain. Quite a bit of fueling had to be added too. Makes sense, just wanted to reiterate tuning is needed. |
If staying NA, I'd suggest 3.5" intake.

can you use the Q45 maf on a 4th gen??? it would be big bore and you would only need to tune

is the z32 maf able to measure more voltage than the A33? I bought a m62 maf that someone sold cos the sensor was broken for $20 (yay).
But should i ever go FI, will i need to change the maf again or should the stock maf in a bigger housing be able to handle all the air? |

Unklejoe maxed his out IIRC w/ his turbo set-up, check out his thread in the FI forum, but he was using the stock housing IIRC. Z32 MAF can read more air given its fixed state unlike the A33 sensor, i.e. if the A33 sensor was in the same diameter housing as the Z32 > A33. |
So i ordered a LR maf and i too received the unit thats the same as stock.

Here's mine before the ceramic heat barrier coating. 80mm ID extruded aluminum, with vibrant velocity stack. OD is only 85mm thus the rings to make the OD an even 3.5" for standard silicon couplers. Total length with velocity stack is ~ 17". Guys, please don't ask me to make you one. This is a huge job to do when I am working full time and the extruded aluminum is a ***** to find. The turbo piping that everyone wants to use is too thin for me to weld. The big thick block for the MAF sensor shelf takes a crap load of heat to get the filler rod to melt, and will most likely blow holes in the turbo pipe. unrestricted airflow.. my car is an all out drag car.
and this lrmaf has two screens. the thin metal screen, and a thick plastic screen. i dont like the plastic one |

maybe, i only looked at it real quick, but i think i saw 3 or 4 'clips'. might be able to just take it out without breaking anything.

Those screens do not disrupt airflow. They take turbulent air and allow the flow to be more laminar/smoother which actually makes power. :rotz:
