VQ35 questions before starting

I'm getting ready to finally install a 2002 VQ35 in my 95 Maxima (with 95 ECU) but have some questions about the tranny. Most of the swap guides don't mention much about the tranny so I just want to make sure I have everything before getting started. Thanks!

1. Will I need a 2002 TCM or can I use the 1995 TCM?

2. Will I need a shifter assembly?

3. Will I need 2002 axles?

4. Do I need cam spacers? If so where can I get them? (link I tried was not working)

5. Do I need anything else? I have:

- 2002 VQ35 Engine
- 2002 AT Transmission
- 1995 VQ30 motor and trans for parts (timing, a/c, alternator, etc)

- 2002 and 1995 wire harness
- 1995 ECU and TCM

Thanks!

Also when I did this swap I had to get the 3.5 fuel pressure regulator.

there's no need to use a 3.5 regulator,i recomend to use the 01 chevy corvette fuel filter/regulator if you are going to get atleast a SAFC tune,it will meke your fuel system "returnless" and will set the fuel pressure at 60PSI ,better atomization and timing advance if you remove fuel with the SAFC

Anyone have more info on the transmission? I can't find any info on it. Do I need a TCM? Do I need axles? I'd like to get this done this weekend so I'm ordering everything I need. Thanks

did i miss something? i thought the general consensus is

Return > Returnless setup.

What transmission was the 3.5 mounted to? You might need to swap the oil pans.

I have a 2002 VQ35 and Automatic transmission from the same vehicle. I'm scrambling for info on whether I need a 2002 TCM and axles. Thanks

OK - by now you know about taking the 3.5 apart and installing all the 3.0 timing chains, gears, front and rear timing covers, oil pan - and the 3.0 automatic flexplate - part of the 3.0 timing setup. The torque converter carries over OK. The 3.0 axles will work - as long as both transmissions are either VLSD or non-VLSD. Being a 2002, I would say that tranny is not. It's probably a RE4F04B. You can check by looking through the hole where the axles go - if there's a shaft visible, it's non-VLSD - an open hole, and it's VLSD, which means the drivers-side axle is different... Speed sensor will work with either one. The 02 TCM will not work - stay with the 3.0 TCM. You would do better with the Stephen Max cam spacers/adapters. Injector connectors must be changed to the 3.5 connector.

The kicker is that the park/neutral switch on the 02 will not work and the harness cabling to the internal solenoids is too short on the 3.0 harness - that cable will need to be extended. The solenoids wire up the same. You must remove the 3.0 park/neutral switch and mount it on the 3.5 transmission. The shift cable mount requires rework as well so it will shift OK. It's how the cable end attaches to the switch and transmission.

Yes, I've done this a few times, and no, it's not easy. Good luck.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed. Now I'm just waiting on the JWT Spacers. They should be here Friday so I hope to finish this weekend. Thanks again. Now I'm off to find an exhaust and engine cover. I want the first time to start it up.....to sound like a completely new car....because it will be lol.

One other thing I remembered - I'm not sure if the connector for the transmission solenoids is the same between the different models. The 95-99 tranny has a long cable with connector which mounts mid-transmission, and the later years have a longer cable from the wiring harness which plugs into the transmission main body just above the oil pan. I had to get a piece of a 2001 engine harness that was the transmission cable, cut off the 99 connector in my car and extend that cable to fit the 2001 transmission I was installing (one of several - I break things). Again - good luck.

EDIT: Do the JWT spacers require drilling the cams to install? The Stephen Max cam adapters take care of the 180* offset between 3.0 and 3.5 cams.

thats on a boosted set up, on returnless(at 60 psi with the corvette filter/regulator) system you have better mixture because of the high fuel pressure and if you pull fuel via SAFC you get some timing advance = more power

No the jwt spacers do not.require drilling.

Ok so last thing I need is a Fuel Pressure Regulator from a 2001 Corvette? And I thought I needed 51 psi? Or 60 psi?

Thanks for all the help again. I've taken lots of pics so far and will post an entire swap build thread when I get it running. As soon as it runs I'm driving straight to a buddies shop and having a custom exhaust put in.
