i dont know the box size on this, but im kinda trying to figure out how much of the trunk is usable without affecting functionality...




the subwoofers would be 15" brahma's...upfiring, and mounted slightly under the rear deck, so that the frame around it wouldnt need cut out. the rear deck would be gone tho, and a false one will be in its place, constructed of expanded metal with factory-look covering.

any comments?

I like the pic's only problem your car needs the rear deck for chassis stiffness. If you remove it or cut it too much that's going to be bad for the car.

 

A functioning trunk? Forget that part and its gold, who needs to carry stuff anyway, that's what the back seat is for!

i agree with this.. unlike people with coupes we can use our back seats for storage.. if you want a bangin' system wiht a nice display you gotta make sacrifices. there are cool set-ups that still have some functionality to them, but the ones that jack all the trunk space tend to look better. of course that's imo and anyone is welcomed to disagree

Because your speaker baffle will replace the rear deck with something that should be at least ten times as stiff, there won't be a problem cutting it out. One thing you will most likely want to do is extend staight down from the deck just inside of the trunk supports. Or at least straight down until you are below their range of motion. Or you could have your neighbor make custom bent supports that won't go down below the deck. Also, you could use a single linear actuator to open it up.

as for the supports for the trunk, custom ones WOULD be cool...my parents have an intrepid that uses a swivel piece with pair of struts on it. maybe i could rip the design off that, and not have it intrude into the trunk at all. ill have to look into that stuff.

ima disagree here...i dont make sacrafices . im willing to the 2x the work, just so that i can have a tight trunk, full functionality, and still have TONS of room for subs.

i'm not saying trunks that still have some functionality are ugly or cna't be "tight" i'm just saying that there are limitations to the more outrageous designs u can do to a trunk if you are worried about space. can't really have that many 3D effects beacuse if you were to put heavy cargo in there the display may get damaged whether it's scratches or cracks

Jmax, I'm going to disagree with you. True the sub box would be somewhat sitffer than the rear deck,(MDF vs. Steel), but when you cut out a vital peice of the car it will cannot be replace. The car will not handle s the engineers intended, due toe the loss of a crumple zone. I'm not saying don't do the setup, but think about it. Also remember when you sell the car if that rear deck is missing you may be responsible for any damages do to future accidents.

 

well, i can assure you, the wheels will be driven off this car, so resale is not an issue. the way the box will be built, it will act as a structural reinforcement of the chassis, as it will be bolted to every surface i can manage to tie into. in the end, other than weight, it should be no different functionally from a normal maxima with an rstb...and the suspension of the car will be completely anyway, so what the engineers did wont stay that way at all.

Well... Just to toss it out there, why not go free air? That'll give you the most room as long as your carefull when droping stuff in the trunk all should be good...Of course asuming you seal the trunk off real good.

 

well, i dont want ANY trunk rattle, so the subs are gonna be completely sealed from the trunk...and im planning on competing occasionally for elemental designs, so i need a box i can make ported. fyi, im planning on building it for 2 15" brahmas, and then when i go to comps, pulling them, and tossing a 12" elemental spl sub in there on an adapter plate, and putting the port for spl into another adapter plate that screws right in. make any sense?

It seems that a pair of ported 15 inch Brahma's would hit a higher dB than a single elemental 12"? With 3 cubic feet per sub you have enough volume that you could install a pair of ports and port covers.

 

well, the reason im looking at a different sub for comps is that i dont wanna torch my brahma's...and the fact that being a rep for eD and competing for adire wouldnt go over well the other thing is that in order to be in the competition class i wanna be in, im pretty much limited to a single driver with a big box, or else ill have no power. so far, ive only found a few amps that would even work for my situation...and that took plenty of searching. what ill probably end up with is a usamps 400x for comps, so i should be okay as far as power goes.

im shooting for meca m1, so with a 12" driver i can only have 586 rated watts, and 99% of the amps out there arent over 500 rated watts, or theyre 600 on the nose

either way, im wanting the state record to be mine. i think its attainable too.

I'm shocked that you wanna compete in meca but aside from that, if you seal the trunk real well and renforce everything as it should be any problems with rattiling should be nill.
