Roasted my wires..

Im installing a 600watt Kenwood amp to 2 12" Infinity Reference Series 1200w subs. I used 10 awg wire from the battery to the amp. On the amp there is a 40 amp fuse and a 30amp inline fuse block by the battery on the power wire. I kept blowing the fuses so i took out the inline fuse and spliced together the power wire so i had the power wire going straight from batt to amp but i still had the 40 amp fuse on the kenwood amp. So i start the car and turn the stereo on...5 seconds later the wires start smoking inside the car / in the engine so i shut the car off jump out and yank the wire off the battery terminal. Im determining its the wire, could it be anything else? Next ill try a thicker wire like 8 or 6 awg. Thoughts/comments wanted! thanx

That is absolutely hilarious. For every time the question has been asked what gauge wire to use and all the times we have gladly answered the question. And all the times people have been told that the fuse on the wire is not for the amp, but for the wire. I hope someone cuts and pastes this post into the faqs page where the answer to wire gauge lies.

10 gauge wire is really only used for small amps, remote starts and or 8" or smaller bass tubes.

Go buy an 8gauge p-flo kit and call me in the morning

8gauge is almost too small too, you want to be able to NEVER have to change your wires again, if I were you, be smart, spend the extra 15$ go with either 4 gauge, or for BIG systems 2 gauge!
