What next?
What next?
All right...
Just got an Alpine 7892 deck, and 6.5" front/6X9 rear speakers (mid level Alpine coaxials; nothing too special)
Huge improvement over dying Bose system in my '90 GXE, but still lacking. (duh)
What would all you guys do next? I am after SQ first, then volume.

Welcome to the Alpine Family ( I have a CDA-7894) I guess you next piece depends on what you like or disslike about your system. If your looking to get a nice full sound you should probally get a sub setup like erty67 indicated. If you want more overall volume get the interior speakers amplified like spuljack suggested. In the end I would suggest both but only you can really know which one you "need more". but I can almost garantee you wont go wrong either way.
sweet...
thanks; one more question. At what point do component speakers become a cost-effective upgrade? I am thinking of doing components in the front after subs and amps, but not sure. When did/would you switch to component speakers?

The way I look at it is you already have speakers and power from your deck so the next logical step is a sub. Then you can get an amp to boost the preformance of your interior speakers (or get a five channel amp as someone suggested to power both your sub and speakers). If you get a sub and are looking for a good 5 channel amp, I have an Orion CS500.5 5 channel that I would like to sell. I will sell it for $190 shipped.
As far as the components go, I would wait. I am a firm believer (and I may get flamed for this) that the average person is better off with a good set of coax's solely b/c the average person and installer is unwilling to spend the time and effort to properly install and tune components and the install of the tweeter becomes an issue of what looks best or is easiest rather than what sounds best. I think a wiser use of money (on top of an external amp) would be sound dampning your doors to make your current speakers sound better.
