Foreign brand subs and amps...

Hey all, I'm getting ready to put a system in my 4th gen max and I need some help on choosing the components.

One of my friends said that he had a hookup with some wholesale dealers for some foreign brand subs and amps. Apparently they are from Germany or somewhere close to that. He said that he could get me 2 18s 2000W max for about $150. Also, an amp to power it for around $300. What are your thoughts on this situation? Are these foreign brands any good?

My stepdad is telling me just to stay with US brands (preferrably Pioneer) he really likes Pioneer stuff.

Thanks!

make sure you check the power ratings. I have had a Volfenhag amp for more than a year, and it has served me well. If you are interested, I can sell it to you for really cheap.

I'm a big proponent of buying us made, but--hate to break it to ya--almost all consumer electronics equipment is made in SE Asia, even for US companies. But at least if you buy from a US based company, the profits will stay in this country. Speaking of european audio equipment, MB Quart (made in germany) make excellent speakers and subs (no amps), so take your pick.

What exactly do you plan to do with a pair of 18 inch subs? Make sure you get enclosure recommendations from the manufacturer. And check the TS parameters to verify the math. My bet is that a single 18 will need your entire trunk to put out the bass anyone would expect from an 18" sub. Most often you get what you pay for. On a rare occasion you can get a good deal on good equipment. But to do that on a regular bassis you need to be familiar with what you are looking for and peruse the for sale columns and ebay.

I thought Pioneer is (and has always been) Japanese?

So which brands belong to what nations? If I'm not mistaken, Alpine, Pioneer & Kenwood are all Japanese, right? Though no matter where the corporate headquarters are, chances are the actual units are made somewhere else where labor is cheaper!

How about Helix or Brax..

not sure if they are german?

i also doubt they fit that price range.. but if he has a hook up on foreign stuff in general, doesn't hurt to look into these, supposed to be some of the best stuff in the world, although there are barely any places that have these things..

I'll buy Brax right after I downgrade all my other equipment to Nakamichi. Since they are both POS. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

I would bet my system that most (probably all) of RF's drivers are built outside the US..

If they are really as good as they claim, why doesn't everybody use them? Instead of nobody?

Everything with a high demand comes down in price. That's the law. Don't get me wrong, there are some very expensive things worth every penny. But I got some info from a very reliable source, I can not name, that there are some unresolved issues with these.
