Adding a Mute Switch on a Factory HU

Is it possible to add a mute switch on a factory Non-Bose 5th Gen HU? I know that handsfree cell phone kits can sometimes tap into OEM radios and mute them during calls. Can a similar setup be achieved through use of a custom switch? If yes, can you post how to do this or a wiring diagram. Thanks.

Non Bose

What about a Non-Bose system? What kind of Relay would you use, and would it A: Completely Turn Off Volume or B: Take the Volume down @ a certain dB? Any additional help from anyone is appreciated.
