I have a couple of questions about the Active Sound System in Gen IIIs. First of all, I would like to know how difficult it is to change the head unit as I am going to buy an Eclipse 4441 (Cassette/CD Controller). Secondly, I am curious about the specs and wattage of this particular system. I am primarily concerned about THD and speaker sizes (I am guessing that I have 5 1/4s in the doors). All I am planning to do is jazz the existing sound system (which is not too shabby in its own right, but could stand a little bass reinforcement), not go all out (That will be reserved for my '02 TrailBlazer (Or '00/'01 Blazer LT) and '96 Impala SS)

4x6"s up front and 6.75"s in the back. Matt and some other people have fit 6.5"s up front. don't know about ur cd player. what's the mount depth? I'm pretty sure 7" is the max mount depth. I installed one with 6.75" mount depth and it was a tight squeeze. Just something to research. Go to crutchfield.com and click "what fits my car" and it will give you examples of sizes that fit. I know what fits are DIN cd players size J. I think.

You can fit just about anything you want in the dash.. I've seen TVs, double-DIN units, dual single-DIN units (my old install had a full-DIN tape/cd controller and a full-DIN EQ in the dash) fit great.

the doors have 4x6 up front, which will need to be replaced soon if you have an aftermarket deck..
you'll also need to bypass the OEM amp in the rear.. when you get that far, let me know and I'll link you to the info on my webpage.

yea im lookin to do the same, i have a cheap kenwood cd payer in there for now, and the stock speakers actually sound really decent to me, on midrange and treble, but i want more bass, so im probably gonna do a sub soon, tryin to do it as cheap as i can.

Thinking

A couple of thoughts after reading the post....

a) Changing the front speakers would not be a bad option for me considering that the Eclipse Head unit is amplified (44W total). Maybe later in the year or next year, I might put some a/d/s 5.25" coaxes or Focal coaxes in the front door and replace the rear speakers with either a/d/s or focal.

b) I might consider putting an a/d/s 6 channel amp in the car but make the whole system more of a true stealth install. I don't want to put a sub box in the trunk because Maximas are not vehicles with commodious trunks and I do need my trunk space (e.g. golf clubs, bowling *****, floor jack).
