*?''s REGARDING THE BOSE SYSTEM IN A 2K3....*

I'm planning on upgrading my factory BOSE audio system on my 2K3 in the near future. But need to know the following before doing anything:
- Size of stock BOSE tweeters???
- Size of stock BOSE front door speakers???
- Size of stock BOSE rear door speakers???
- Size of stock BOSE rear-shelf subwoofer???
Obviously,I'm just going to keep the stock BOSE Head-Unit and just upgrade all speakers and upgrade the stock BOSE amp.
If this topic has been brought up before. I'd like to say sorry, but I did searched every thread last night but couldn't find anything regarding it. Any help will be appreciated.

Be sure to use PAC's AOEM-NIS2 kit. It will allow you to get 4 channels of pre-amps from the Bose HU. It'll run you around $80 or so (unless the prices have dropped recently). It's basically a "Y" cable that connects to the back of the stock HU, the stock harness, and then connects to the line-level convertor and RCA outputs. Then you can run RCAs to your aftermarket amp.

Also, I'd definitely recommend running the RCAs down the passenger's side too, since there are power wires already running down the driver's side.

If I had the money to replace all the speakers and the amp, I'd be doing the same. I'm saving up for about 8 projects at once, so it'll be a while before I make it to this upgrade. If you have any questions along the way, let me know. I've torn apart the car enough times to be able to help you out.

I don't know if you got the full kit for $30 or not. My kit was $80 about 9-10 months ago (but it wasn't sold as a kit then).

With all due respect to your experience. The rear doors are 6.5. I have never used a set of 5 1/4s in the Maximas that Ive done ( about 4-5 dozen 5th gens). Not saying that a 5 1/4 doesnt work, but 6.5 is appropriate.

I double checked on Cruthfield, and it said 6.5 for non bose, 5.25 for bose for 2001. I looked at a few cardomain pages (all years 00-03) to see what people are using. Of the 3 I found which mentioned size, 2 said the rears were 5.25, one said, 6.5's in all doors. Have the cars you worked on equiped with the bose system?

With non Bose the speakers were built into the factory brackets and new ones had to be fabricated. Making it very easy to use 6.5s. With Bose the factory brackets easily took 6.5s.

I have Bose and I tried to put 6.5s in my rear doors and it didn't fit. I bought a pair of 5.25s and it fit like a condom. Maybe my car was a fluke I dunno and I'm not doubting Don's advise at all, just speaking for myself. I have a 2k2 with bose. Well no more bose now. lol

No! Been there done that. The stock Clarion, oops sorry, "Bose" head unit sounded pretty bad compared to an aftermarket. The bass was too muddy, even with a good amp and the mids and highs were mediocre at best.

According to the reply silversurfer got form Bose, there is already a 4 channel amp, plus the sub amp.

How feasible would it be to replace the speakers, the 4xAmp, the sub and its 1xAmp... but keep all the wiring?

It could be pretty much plug and play. My only concern would be the gauge of the stock wiring being able to handle a more powerful amp.

I had to put 5 1/4 in my BOSE equipped 2k3.

I think you had to do a little more work to get a 6 1/2 in there, but it's not impossible..

for those of you fitting 6.5's "just fine" in your rear doors, what kind of 6.5's are you using?

Boston Pro Series 6.5's would not fit without taking off that braket in my car. I had to go with Boston Pro Series 5 1/4's

There are two types of 6.5" speakers. Most of the speakers out there are Domestic 6.5" speakers. They do have Japanese 6.5" speakers out there, Eclipse and Alpine are ones that do have them. If you ask most stereo shops for a Japanese 6.5 they will just give you a puzzled look though.

You can pretty much fit a Domestic 6.5" into any Japanese car but you will have to make new mounting plates for them most of the time.

I had Rainbow 6.5" speakers installed by Don last month (Had factory Bose). Perfect fit, no trimming or "custom" install needed. Just had to drill extra holes in the factory plastic speaker holder thing.

I ran new wires for the hell of it. When I was buying my dash kit from al & eds, I told them how much of a pita it was to run the wires and the guy was like, that's your first mistake, you wont be able to hear the difference. He said a machine could pick it up, but it not a human. I was like whatever, I wanted to do it the right way...

FYI, my rears were 5.25" as well.

That is not true (what the Al & Ed's guy said). In a car it would be harder to tell. But in home stereo, you can pick up the difference very easily.

hey guys, i'm new to the forums.

i have a '03 max and found this info on the speakers to be a great help.

still have a couple questions though.

the rear speakers on a bose system w/o navigation. are they confirmed to be 6.5" or is it 5.25"? and are the rears components?

also, when replacing the rear sub what should i look for? i'm know next to nothing about looking for subs and i'm really just looking to upgrade the speakers for now.

thanks for any help.

For 01, they are 5.25. If you want 6.5" they look like they can fit, you just need to make the spacers. The rears are not components. For the sub, look at any sub you want. Nothing is going to fit in the stock location. If anything does, it wont be worth the price/performance ratio.

Keep in mind, the bose speakers are rated at 1ohm and aftermarket speakers are rated at 4ohms. You cannot simply replace the speakers, as you will need a stronger amp to power them.

Stock rears are technically 5.25. Although Ive Never ran anything smaller than a 6.5 which fits in with ease.

There are a ton of 8" subs out there that would play very well IB.

Bose speakers are 2Ohm, so a set of 2Ohm speakers/comps would play fine, although somewhat difficult to find. I would definately suggest an aftermarket amplifier.

ok. so i should plan on getting a new amp if i decide to get any aftermarket speakers. any special adaptors or kits needed if i go that route?

also, i may just plan on replacing the head unit, but i've got more questions on that so i'll check the FAQ first.

thanks again guys.
