ports

i'm thinking about converting my sealed box into a ported one. my question is, does it matter where you place the port? ( on top, side, back, front of the box) thanks

port sub box

The ports should be on the same surface as the speakers. Box should be against rear seat, speakers facing rear of car.

Where they are located on the box does not matter so long as they remain unobstructed. Good luck getting your sealed box to sound good ported.

yea hopefully it won't be crappy. my box has the right internal air volume to be ported, specified by my sub's manufacturer, so i figure what the heck i'd give it a try. thanks for the input

You need to subtract from the sealed box volume the displacement volume of the ports.

also when you port the box it's a good idea to get a subsonic filter. Ported might be a little louder but it won't sound as good. I'm sealing my ports.

A well designed and built ported box can sound as good as sealed. That's the key, building it right. Most ported boxes are built strictly for spl and not for sq.

well i never did made my box ported. i went over to my friend's house and tried it on his setup. it wasn't being used and was sitting in the garage. it sounded ok but not as defined as a sealed box. i guess i'm going to leave my box as it is since i'm looking for clear bass response. I think it's time to upgrade my tens to something better. thanks for all the input.

I sealed up my ports the other day. Its much louder and tighter. The Tempest likes sealed much better.
