Subwoofer/ sub amp problem.. heat causing poor performance?

First, it seems to be not pounding as tight and as hard after running for a little while. However, I say that it is still running because I hear a difference when I turn the sub off and on.. However, it even shuts off completely at times and I can even smell something burning Obviously my amp is taking a beating..

but why?

I am not even playing it at 1/2 volume.. Today my typical trip home, took me 1 hour or so.. after about 20 minutes of driving it began to perform very poorly, then it just turned off.. after i turned off the stereo and turned it back on in about 10 min, it was back to normal... then the same thing happened again.. it turned down then off..

I am running a Crossfire VR402 Amp bridged to a Image Dynamics IDQ 12" if it makes any difference. Is it not hooked up right or is it supposed to do that?

i bought the equipment moderately used, but it was in good shape..

some suggested that it is heat causing the problems and the amp is automatically shutting down when it overheats. It was actually VERY hot to the touch.. but why does it overheat, it's about 60 degrees outside and i didn't even blast it at 1/2 the power.

where should I look?
this is dissappointing considering I just put this stuff in a week ago and I suddenly began having problems.

what ohms is your voice coil(s) on your sub and how do you have your sub wired. also, where do you have the amp grounded?

Like JDM said check your grounds (where, how, what is grounded to and how far away). If your impedence is too low then you could be running the amp too hot.
