Best head unit for $200, should I?

Hi, new to these forums, nice place to find Anyway, I just got a BRAND NEW(to me) 96 Maxima, and it's the first car that I actually own, just for my own use. Anyway, I always planned to replace the head unit for any car that I would buy, just assuming I could and should get a better one. However, my Maxima came with a Bose head unit and about 8(?) Bose speakers. Personally, I just don't like how bland the Bose head unit looks, but I also heard that it has problems with Cd-rs, which is basically where all my music is. Can you guys recommend either the best head unit for $200, or if I shouldn't change the head unit at all?? Any help appreciated, I like these forums

Since you have the Bose's setup you would have to either replace all your speakers with the HU, or get an adapter (50 bucks I belive). As for a 200 dollar HU, if you don't plan to do a complete new system (speakers, amps, subs, video ect ect...) I would go with a mid grade pioneer, kenwood or maybe a sony (I personaly hate sony, but thats just me). Search the web a little and compare different models that you like. www.crutchfield.com has good stuff, and a nice little "compare" option as well. Prices are the same as you would get in a mobile audio/video shop for the most part though. hope this helps.

When upgrading Bose you should really think about it. If you arent going to replace speakers then I would not bother with a new HU.

I like Alpine also(thats the setup i'm going with in my Max), but there lower priced HU's aren't spectacular, kinda bland looking as well. By his post I got the impression he wants a little eye candy (I don't blame him lol).

thanks guys, I think I'm gonna wait till I can get about an extra $1,000, then just switch everything out. But does that mean I have to buy 8 seperate speakers along with a new HU???

Theres 6 speakers as far as I know. 2 in the doors, 2 tweeters in the pillars and 2 in the rear deck. And yes you would have to replace them all, unless you just got an aftermarket HU with the adapter. With the speakers I would get a component set for the front (comes with the door speakers, tweeters and crossovers) and a nice pair for the rear deck.

I just replaced my headunit with the Pioneer 5500. It plays MP3's and is XM ready. I got it for under $200 off of e-Bay, plus $50 for the adapter which I have been told was a rip-off, and $20 for the dash kit and antenna adapter. I am using the stock Bose speakers and see no reason to change them out.

I just purchased a 2003 Pioneer DEH-P6500. Its XM ready and comes with a wireless remote. The options are endless with the subwoofer controls they have for this. Not to mention the tite *** appearance of it.

I bought mine for $207.00. great price! Cant beat it! I think this think is like $350 at some places.
