okay... i convinced you to click on this thread, now i hope you'll leave some comments for me.

i'm putting in a new HU this weekend, replacing all the BOSE crap and adding a whole lot more.

if you've read any of my past posts, you know the basics... here it is again:

6.5" speakers: Kenwood KFC-1686 180W 3ways to be mounted on .5" MDF in front doors

6x9 speakers: Cerwin Vega SS-2693 3ways going in the rear deck

Subs in trunk: 12" Jensen XS 375W in sealed box. as soon as i pop one of these, i'm going to buy two Polk 12" woofers.

New HU: Clarion RDX665Dz 40x4 with dual preouts and only cost $120 retail: $260

AMPS: for the 6x9's and 6.5"s: Clarion 400.4 50x4 RMS
for the subs: Jensen 125x2 RMS 500 total peak

And running 40W each channel off the head unit will be :
4.5" Kenwood KFC-1066 80w 2ways in the rear doors
and some cheap 8" woofers in custom boxes under the bucket seats. when these pop, i'll buy better 8's and stick them on the clarion amp and run the 6.5"s off the HU

Is there a critical flaw in this idea that you have noticed? if so, speak up, please! i'm going to do this starting saturday...thanks guys!

{pictures to follow as installation progresses}

stereo install

hey guy what ever you do do not run any thing off the head unit. I tried with a highline jvc HU and it kept clippin on my 89 max se.
I went with the pioneer premier 690 HU w/a pioneeer in dash cd unit,w/ a pioneer premier 10 disc changer in the trunk, 5 1/2 in the factory Enclosure by GS audio and 6 1/2 in the rear deck! these are component speakes from GS audio. I dyno matted my trunk lid and walls as dfor my trunk i have 2 12" memphis dual voice coils in a 1Cu ft seal boxed running off a phoenix gold line driver and bass cube. I m running a 600 watt phoneix gold amp a 1 farat stinger cap and my highs and mids are running off a audiotek 300.2. nothing runs off my deck except my preouts.
if you need help i can help you step by step give me a email later or you can call me at home my number is (803)494-5781! Good luck! Also my latest stereo mod was a inside windshield am/fm antenna from harda sweet now i can cover the outside antenna hole up!

ditch the rear door speakers

front speakers are key. the rear door speakers will only cloud up the stage. the under seat subs is an interesting concept, but better subs in the trunk is a better idea.

well u can mono the rear and turn the gains way down so when it's on u can't hear it, but if it was off, u feel something is missin. thas how the staging should be.. IMO of course. buti plan to have 10" midbass from illusion that are only 2 in deep. gonna mount them into my floor board right infront of the front seats.. and have 8" midbass in kick panels and horns for the higher frequencies.. and of course a real nice x'over and eq.

I would ditch all the rear speakers to clear amp channels for the speakers that matter. As for the 8 under the seat I've considered that or a ten. Slot loading it to the floor under the front seat passengers. But I wouldn't put all that enclosure time into a cheap eight. Use something that sounds good and install it correctly. There is very little room under the seat so a deep driver is almost impossible. But even a lot of time and money might not make this sound good.

whoa whoa whoa. youre totally confused. what do you want your max to sound like? a concert hall or a $30 boombox? start with a good set of 6'5 components up front with 60-100 watts going to them from a good amp, not the head unit, rear speakers should be quieter, so you can probably get away with head units built in amp. then get another amp for one or two subs. and design the box so its completely sealed off from the trunk like mine. all this shouldnt be that much more expensive that your 10 speaker setup, but it will sound way better.

It's 100 percent a matter of personal preference, but here's another approach, that will play pretty much just as loud, but sound a lot cleaner and better...

- just 1 pair of very high quality component speakers up front - Boston Acoustics, ADS, MB-Quart, Focal, Dynaudio, DEI, Polk, etc... (oops, don't want to start a debate on which is best... just keep in mind, at the minimum, all the brands listed here are at least, very very good)
- just 1 pair of modestly priced 6.5 speakers in the rear deck, perhaps the same brand as the front speakers, but faded to where they're making sound, but you don't specifically hear them when you're in the front seat. (Because of the low volume, you could probably run the rear deck speakers off the head unit, and bridge your main amp to feed the component speakers more power)
- Subwoofer(s), with lots and lots of power. (One relatively common thing for people who want lots of volume, is to run 3 JL Audio 10W6 woofers with 500 or more watts. Trust me, that'll be loud. Heck, 1 of 'em is plenty loud)

With good subs, 1 pair of great quality speakers instead of 3 pairs of medium quality speakers, and lots of power, this system will be as loud as you want it, and sound much, much cleaner than one with all those speakers playing at the same time, and the sound from each of the speakers arriving at your ears at slightly different times.
